    Default Tacho not working

Hi guys, i am fairly new here on the forum. I have a AE111 corolla and did a engine swap. I went from a 4E-FE N/A engine to a turbo charged 4E-FTE engine

Now the only problem i stil have to this moment is that the tacho is not working properly, its just bouncing around not giving actual readings....

I dont know exactly to solve this problem i think that the ignition signal is different to the tacho but i dont know were i should begin too look for this problem.

This was the 4E-FE igniton system:

the foto seems to be not working :S, but here is a link to the picture

And this is the rotor arm ignition sytem that is on my 4E-FTE engine:

I am not excaly very good with electrical wiring but i learn very fast so maybe someone can give me some info, and maybe how too fix it

    cheers Wesley

You may be experiencing the same problem as the ae86 guys do when they convert from a distributer set up to coils when they convert from 4age to 4agze.

The problem exists due to the dizzy sending a single pulse signal to the tacho and the coils sending a double pulse signal. The reverse could be occurring in your case considering you've gone from coil pack to distributer ignition setups.

I had to mod the small board that runs the needle. The one that converts from electrical to mechanical signal behind the tacho. I had to change 2 resistors and one capacitor to ones with different resistence.

I dont know what the changes top yours would be though.

    Hope that helps somewhat

this helps a bit indeed! I am furhter then i was . How would i find out how to mod the cirquit board? Maybe i can use a similar tacho meter from a model with a 4A-FE engine that has the distributor ignition? And fit that into the gauge cluster?
Or are there any devices that can alter the signal?

    thanks for the help

I'm not sure how you would find out what needs modding on the board. An auto electrician could figure it out for you but....

I followed this article to do mine

    http://members.iinet.net.au/~awcabren/ae86gzetacho.pdf

I know its for the older corollas but if the signals are the same and the board runs the same tacho signal setup then it may work.

However, i do not know if it will work or if your circuit board is similar. It would be better to get an auto sparky to look at it, especially because its a newer car and has more electrical gear in it. Just explain that it needs to be modified to read a single instead of double input signal. Might want to wait for some confirmation on what i'm saying to be right.

    Thats about all i've got

Electrical troubleshooting is the most annoying part of conversions imho

    BTW nice conversion, very neat

Hmm u might be right indeed, that topic for the AE86 is very interesting. But because my car is a lot younger than a AE86 i think the cirquit boards are different...
But thanks for ur input mate!!

Anyone else got something i could use in my journey of finding the problem?

    HI,

You will probably find that it is as Lost Prophet said, that the tacho is suited to a different trigger from the distributor. You may be able to get it recalibrated by an instrument place or the other option is to fit an after market tacho which is suited to the new kind of ignition system. It looks like the same ignition system (or similiar) to the one on the 4AFE motors so maybe try and find a factory tacho out of an AE92 or something. Unfortunately i dont know how to fix it yourself.

    Hope this helps

Yeah i was thinking about finding a tacho meter from the same model car but only the 1600cc version they have like u said the same ignition as my FTE now.
thanks for the help hope it works
