sounds like thrust bearing on clutch
and the normal twinplate noises
I love the twinplate noise

so awesome
Guys / Gals,
I been having some questions about this clutch / gearbox / engine combo...
The 1J runs sweet and fuck does it have traction issues atm, and the clutch holds up nciely, fucken nice to drive too!
But my concern is the Twin Plate noises. I know they are supposed to be noisy, but just how noisy?
With the pedal pressed down, the clutch rattles around quite alot. Without the inspection plates on the box, and a nicely enlarged hole still in the tunnel, the noise is really quite loud, i mean not deffening, and you dont have to yell over it, but its a considerably loud rattle...
The other noise that concerns me, is when changing down gears, i.e. From 3rd into 2nd...
While i let my foot off the clutch the gearbox / engine makes a low deep hearty grinding noise.. There is no feel to this grind, just a noise. But as soon as clutch is fully engaged and pedal is completely out, the noise goes away...
My uncle is convinced that its bearings, but he always says its bearings...
Anyone in a similar situation that can tell em what to expect from said gearbox/clutch/engine???
Cheers,
Jase

So the geardown grind would be throwout bearing, rattle will be normal twin plate?
*going to 'what pisses me off thread' to bitch about ppl who lie when they sell you stuff*

My OS Giken Twin does rattle a significant amount
I suggest you seal the cabin again, with something like the rubber boot that is used from factory around the shitfter...will make it lots quiter!
As for the grinding, hmm
If you lightly rest your foot on the clutch pedal -> to move the clutch fork and release bearing in enough for the release bearing to start spinning on the pressure plate is there a noise? Noise would be indicative of clutch release bearing...
Obviously don't press the clutch pedal enough to disengage the clutch in the above test
Btw you should setup the clutch so that the clutch disengages close to the bottom of the pedal (i.e. start rattling close to the bottom of the clutch pedal throw), I've been told by the likes of Jim Berry that the clutches don't like to be overthrown

Well i will have to adjust that, as the clutch friction point is relatively high up...
Also, i have done a bunch of different things, as far as testing the throw out go...
I.e. I have slowly released the clutch untill are pressure point, (so i could try and make enough load to do bov in my garage)
No noise...
I release the clutch enough to stop the rattle (light pressure), still no noise...
The only time i have heard this grinding noise, bar when im gearing down and releasing the clutch, is when i am pulling up the driveway say, and rev the fuck out of it while riding the cluch, but nearer to the end of engagement...
So your saying, i should have the friction point closer to the bottom of the pedal movement. ATM mine is say at the top... And i kinda liked it
Cheers,
Jase
P.s. How do i adjust the point on the r154? Or is it adjusted in the pedal??
Also, if you have a 1jz, how the fuck do i adjust the idle? lol i was searching the other day, but found a few things, some didnt work, and the other i wasnt willing to try because it consisted of like a bazillion different screws (i.e. the throttle body adjustment screws) lol
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_LtHs0Zydew this is my twinplate on my 1j is your similer sounding to that?
Yeh, only when clutch pedal is in...
I figured that'd be the normal twin plate sound than?
Cheers,
Jase
Yes that is what they sound like, you boys need to HTFU
Yeah I'd make the friction point much lowerOriginally Posted by Smokey228
I'm guessing that you have a sprung twin plate?Originally Posted by Smokey228
It might simply be the sprung plates doing their job?
At the pedal is the only adjustment normally, but if you have an R154 with an OS giken twin plate then you will have a push->pull converter, so there might be adj down there as well, I'm not familiar (with the p->p).Originally Posted by Smokey228
The ECU has the ISCV and is meant to use it to adjust RPM...is it powered and wired up properly? The ECU is meant to set the RPM...Originally Posted by Smokey228
Otherwise if you WANT to make it idle up you could crack the throttle manualy via the adj screw, just make sure the TPS still closes the IDL contacts when the throttle is closed...

I don't have an OS twin plate but I have an ORC one and it's all the same s@#t anyway. The rattle is normal, mine rattles like a bastard as Linden said it's like Christmas when I come around because my car plays jingle bells.
Mine will do the grind sound occasionally on down shift when shifting like a pussy and not rev matching. I'm pretty sure it's just a case of making noise because you're slipping the plates.
Either way if it doesn't make noise just pushing the throw out bearing against the fingers of the pressure plate then it's not going to be throw out bearing. My father and Uncles tried to convince me that my throw out bearing was stuffed as well but it's more a case of their generation never having been exposed to twin plate clutchs.
hey i did'nt really know how to explain lol. well heres a photo of what i did to change the idle. adjust these two screws to change the tension of the wire.

fuck me that twin plate is quiet.... mine';s a much noisier bitch than that. get a nice grinding kind of noise when the clutch is engaged, and the standard rattle and clank of any twin plate at idle.
This really should be in another threadOriginally Posted by chaserbuddy
While the method shown in ur pic will work, I don't think it's the best! lol
You will be putting the throttle cable under tension all the time...the same thing can be achieved by adjusting the throttle plate stop on the throttle body (Which will require you to adjust the throttle cable as you have anyway to keep the same throttle pedal slack as before)...

The rattle was pretty noisy on mine. People would ask me at a set of lights why my car is rattling, and would look at me weird when I told them it was a twin-plate clutch.
I've got lots of pics here if you need them http://v8supra.com/clutch.html.
I went through 2 clutches and 3 hydrollic thrust races because it wasn't set up properly. Make sure its setup properly. (do the sums - stupidly expensive).

Edit: Realised that you were prbly talking about the clutch pedal throw...!Originally Posted by v8supra
In that case my comments about not overthrowing it apply...
As a note I did machined the flywheel to get it back to the right total preload, so if I ever get new plates I will have to surface the friction face, or the cage the same amount to get it back to correct...
Bare in mind that my 1jz is pretty well stock so the clutch isn't being overly stressed
Oh and Joshstix has the loudest twin plate that I've heard! lol
