Silly thought but you don't have the gear stick in backwards by any chance?
Hi,
I've got a w58 gearbox here and I cant seem to work out how to get it in reverse. It's got some weird setup where you push it and it's on the left side instead of it normally being straght under 5th gear.
I can get it into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear without any problems.
Any ideas?

Certainly not a W58 then...Originally Posted by Com_VC
Or it could be a W58 with a dodgie bearing, I had an old T50 do that to me. I just put up with it and thought of it as a safety measure. (not ideal tho).
Don't know how different they are but I also found that when i accelerated and then backed off in third, the whole shifter would move a fair bit. Does yours do that also.

That's a borgie.
it looks the same as a w58, has the steel sandwich plate in between the casings. Could possibily be hilux, not 100% sure what it came out of or how I can tell really. I bought the box as a conversion to use behind my commodore.
not sure if the gear stick is backwards, but it shouldn't make a difference I dont think? On the gear knob it clearly shows that you have to push and turn it to the left to get to reverse.
any ideas?
Pics required. Could have an aftermarket reverse lockout installed.
Who did you buy it from?

remove said gearknob and use it like a normal gearbox![]()
if its a W58 or pretty much any toyota gearbox it should be
1 3 5
Neutral
2 4 R
if its not like that and all the detent springs are in the correct position then i dont think its a W series.

Can you get shorter shifters for these? The one that came with it is massive. Or do people just cut them down?
Thanks
lol thats gold
Yep, there is a crowdin NZ making them, I bought one, $260 inc postage. Awesome. Fantastic build quality. Won't work on a borgie though![]()
yep, short shifters are available and generally pop up on ebay fairly cheap.Originally Posted by Com_VC
