Buy a boost gauge...
Hey guys, i got the car running properly last night, or atleast kinda properly. I.e. Fitted radiator, plumbing, re-mounted cooler, waterpump and pulley etc...
Took it for a stab up the road about 100m, turnt around and back home...
Now it felt slugish, as if it wasnt making power. Im sure though, even a stock, poor condition 1jz in a celica should feel pretty damned good!?
So im geussing its not making any boost, the stock bov does make the tiniest apperance when coming off, but that could easily just be left over vaccum...
Today, i went for a stab, shut her off, jumped out and stuck my ears against the turbo housings... I DIDNT HEAR ANYTHING?Now surely even ct12's would make even a quite whine after being shut down...?
I started it up, reved in neutral, (ct12's i imagine shouldnt take a whole lot to spin them, so even the tiny load of the engine will make them go surely?), from the engine bay, and listened in for them. Still no noise what so ever...
Im really stumped, without taking the intake off the turbos, i cant be sure. But it sounds to me like both front and rear turbos may be seized up completely?
Or possibly a wastegate issue, could it be stuck open constantly? Letting out all gases causing the turbo's not to spool properly/at all?
Any help is appreciated and +rep shall be shat out by a precious white bunny carrying a basket of chocolate eggs...
Cheers,
Jase
Buy a boost gauge...
got your message last nightwas too buggered to reply,
got a boost gauge? if not go buy one from repco now $35, easiest way to tell,
OR pull the closest intercooler hose off, closest to the turbs, give it a rev, you shold get a great gush of air/boost,
besides that. you need the gauge to see if its making boost 1st, then checki the rest like boost leaks, all hoses tight,

Get a boost gauge? even a cheapy will give you a rough idea of whats going on.
¿?
Will have to do that tonight than...
Anyone able to give me other ideas though? Cause im now confident its not making boost. It feels like a dog, deffintly not 150rwkw worth! And im kinda expecting a bit more than that...
Cheers,
Jase
if the turbs are seaized it will be glogged up, rev slowly (slower then usuall)
you can also check that the wastegates are hooked up, (fun job)
Grrrr... Yeh thats what i wanna check...
I am going to get a gauge tonight after work. Tomorrow i'll pull the intake off the front turbo and see if the wheel is spinning, and how hard it is to spin by hand...
Ill hook the gauge up and see if its making solid boost after that...
If it is, i need more power
If its not, and they spin, ill check wastegate, if they dont spin and it feels fucked, i might look into steel wheeled turbos
Cheers,
Jase
CT12A's are not ball bearing units, they dont spin at idle, they take less than 5 seconds to stop spinning from full boost and even if they were spinning you still wouldnt hear anything by putting your ear to the housing because if you did there would be something seriously wrong.

Cheers man, thats useful info... Makes me feel warm inside too

just go ebay mani, and a t70![]()
They don`t spin at idle...? come on jza70-r someone with your rep level should know better, If you can`t hear turbos then you`ve got a serious problem, if a 1jz turbine went from 100,000 rpm plus, to zero in 5 seconds while at the same time having the tendency to remain motionless at idle...![]()
lets look at this realistically - either you are missing your turbo`s internals, (but hey, they don`t spin anyway so it doesn`t matter).... or it`s because someone has put some cottee`s ice-magic in your engine... but as long as your engine is warm, the ice magic shouldn`t go hard so you will receive some sort of pleasant smelling lubrication
my dad picks the fruit that makes the cordial, that your turbos like best.![]()

from my experience ive never seen a CT12A sit there and spin freely at idle. As for hearing the turbo, i was referring to when it was at idle, obviously you hear any turbo when its working.Originally Posted by Maverick
I have a video of my 1JZ starting up and idleing with the turbo's clearly exposed and not moving at idle. These same turbos make 320rwhp @ 1.2 bar so no theres nothing wrong with them. The video is on youtube if you would like me to show you![]()

And i wouldnt exactly expect a non Ball Bearing turbo to spin at idle. But i thought it would spin even a small amount at heavy throttle even in neutral...
But even than, i dont hear anything when driving... And i hve no bonnet and only 60cm of 3" alloy pipe as an intake with no filter. So there is no excuse... I should hear it driving!
