gee your a grumpy c*nt hey?

you see when i changed my twins over the steelies spun slighty on idle, where as the ceramics didn't at all until a few months down the track i removed piping to clean up and check front blades that they also slighty moved @ idle.

    now lighten up ya fuck.

every 1j ive worked on they have spun at idle, heck even my to4 spins at idle.
maybe yours are slightly coked with burnt oil or something.

jase, you know you need to put your foot down b4 the magical boost fairy comes along dont you?

rip the D/S cooler pipe off the turbo outlet pipe and check if there is good airflow at a high idle say 2500rpm or so.

if it does flow but makes no boost then check each one individualy to see if one is better than the other as 1 may have dropped an exhaust wheel.

if 1 is rooted you can normally hear a strange swooshing noise as it tries to come on boost but due to one being fubared it just blows back thru the comp cover.

    cheers

The front one spins, pulled the front piping off and it spins, it also sounds insane

It also blows air solidly at a generous rev. But at idle it just sort of hops around. Jumps a little, than stops, jumps a little and than stops... But there is no shaft play at all and spins quite smoothly, so i'd say its a relatively good cond turbo, and i would assume if they arent all like this, than it must just be coked oil or something...

I didnt remove the rear cover though as its to hard to get to, but i can still pull the intake off after the turbo and feel for air through that one... So will do that tomorrow or saturday... Hopefully its an intake leak or maybe a fubared afm, is the 1jz a map sensored or AFM based engine? Also, if AFM where is it?

    Cheers,
    Jase

EDIT: Reason why i say AFM is cause, if the afm is fucked, would it not increase fuel accordingly cause it doesnt see all the air?

It is a MAP engine, the later (VVTi) engines are MAF. Not sure where it actually measures the air though, most likely the manifold though.

Well i must apologise if CT12A's do spin at idle. Mine must have issues, or maybe the motor was cold and the oil still thick?

this is not a good thing at all - even an old-school turbo with bush-style bearing will spin at idle and quite freely.

I would be checking oil supply, looking at the housing and blade edges for signs of contact and considering puttin aside cash for replacements or a big single upgrade.

however, if you are only looking at a video of the compressor wheel not with your actual eyes, it may appear to be stationary at times, due to the slow shutter speed of (any) camera.

Nah it was with the eyes, although, the motor has never really been run very long, so no doubt the oil was cold. Also, the idle would hunt between 900-1200, at 1200 it would spin, not freely, but slowly, and when it backed off to 900, it would stop again...

But the turbos felt quite good when touching, they had no shaft play at all, and would turn, just not as easily as you make it sound like they should. Though i have never played with a non BB turbo, so i dont know if this is normal or not. Perhaps i'll get my mates t25 around. Its from an older sr20, and from memory they arent a BB turbo...

From what i've been told, it meassures pressure from the manifold...
