Engine earths are good, i'm pretty sure about that. I don't have another coil/ignition module to test - can I use a bosch coil?

I've manually marked TDC on the crank pulley and done the timing from that. The pully is unfortunately rotated several degrees due to the keyway getting knocked around somehow. The plan was to replace the crankshaft at some stage but not before I figure out this damn problem Need to know the engine works before I start breaking it.

I can't hear it pining at all - will there be much harm in retarding the timing below 10 degrees?

I'll also check the distributor out - perhaps it needs some TLC...

Don't know if that will be your problem but it's a strange one i had. Have you tried a coil or ignition module. Engine earths??
Took a look at the rotor, tried to mesure the resistence between the center and each of those outside points and neither would show any connectivity at all!

Could this be those resistors? They appear to be within the resin - and surely they are there for a reason

Retarded timing feels... well retarded. Feels like crap, comes on boost and doesn't actually feel like it's come on boost! I have a feeling the AFM might be playing a role now since I know it has been tampered with in the past. I will take a look at this now.

Our engines have flapper type AFM's, over time the spring gets loose, resulting in a very rich mixture, adjusting the spring a click tighter may help.

My 1g-gte runs rich, everytime I park it the exhuast strinks, during high revs it does feel like its spluttering a bit, but its so subtle.

I think it may be the air flow meter, maybe oxygen sensor?

    Yah

I can't remember if I had fixed this issue too, I've forgotten it all now that I have 1jz loving.

Oh - FWIW, the spring tightening had been tried And O2 will only affect crusing.
