Closest to the load? That makes no sense at all!

You'll find cylinder 4 is most likely to develop problems because it's located at the hottest part of the engine. Think about how the coolant flows through the engine and you'll see what I mean.

funny, the number 1 cylinder in my experience with a bore gauge is always slightly more worn then the others. As its the coolest part

Well, im not 100% sure exactly what goes on with it, but a good friend of mine who has been an engine technician for 15 years told me that one... personally i do trust his judgement (he is also a toyota man, makes him more trustworthy IMHO) Either way, ive found no4 to be the most susceptable to spun bearings and worn rings... maybe the bores dont suffer as much due to the heat, but the rings wear more.

never sed the bores didnt wear more mate, just the rings... seems to have a slightly different side loading or something.

can be blown between coolant gallery and piston, so you wont have water in oil or oil in water, but you'll be loosing water, and the car will run like a dog, beleive me, i am gifted with the foresight of 7M experience.

i didnt think there are lifters in a DOHC 18RG head?
its cam lobe on bucket on shim on valve stem top?
My 18R-geu was quite noisy for a while from the top of the motor, but mainly on startup after sitting around for a while(at least a few hours), and i suspected warn oil pump which wasnt producing enough oil pressure in the upper timing chain gallery quick enough. so the chains rattled a little (nasty sound)..
And doesnt the timing chain tensoiner work by oil pressure helping to tension the chain?
possibly oil pump is wearing out in the motor?

hope my b.s. makes some sense?

i reckon you'll find it's the cluster shaft bearing, as it doesn't get much oil, and caning it at a racetrack(throwing oil to the back of the box) has accelerated it's failure.

23t-gte - it's an old engine with a big oil filter, so oil pressure will take a few seconds to build then get to the head.

ya 18rg's dont have lifters, pushrod engines have lifters. valve guides could be flogged out severly, which i cant imagine it making to much noise tho. It has to be timing chains, maybe bucket bores if u are terribly unlucky. Cant see it being valve seats, u can have bent valves and not hear any mechanical noise, but u can here missing.

Or the engine may be in detonation permantly.

the cluster bearing is inside the input shaft of the box.

the only thing it could be is the chain/tensioner, or a lost shim, which i would think unlikely.

timing chain tensioner replaced 2 months ago by trusted reutable mechanic.

head noise and gbox noise present atm ... will have to pull rocker off and check chain.

anything i should check while its off???
