I've never had an issue with size of device = seal size, and I've never obtained a measurement that was anything other than round numbers in millimetres. That might not be the correct approach, but when the seal said 49, the bearing cap was 49.0mm in diameter. I let the seal manufacturer worry about how much bigger the seal has to be in order to be spec'ed to fit that size
Since I didn't change the seals in the 2JZ I didn't realise they also went to half of round numbers

Yep. "These are the seals and bits I need, get them for me please".
Belt bearings, except for one, were all aftermarket because they were exactly the same part numbers from exactly the same manufacturer. Crank and rear main seals I couldn't care less coz it wasn't a lot of money. Cam seals were $65 each so I didn't get those (coz you have to pull the cams out to change them so it wasn't worthwhile for something that wasn't broken).

Nope, but I'll certainly price them up when I need them ..

Agreed, but that is not to say that everything that's made by NOK for toyota will be available to NOK distributors.
Toyota must have gotten batches of bearings made in the past that don't match anything you can buy off the shelf - eg SC12 bearings - so it's not impossible that your seals fall into the same catergory.

Denso doesn't make it's own integrated circuits for their ECUs but try to buy one off the shelf to replace one

Guess you'll just have to fork out that extra $15
BTW, sometimes it's also worthwhile to spend $3 in bubble wrap

It seems that I've managed to cause a major shit fight when there really wasn't any need? This was by no means what I was trying to do...

All I was trying to do was confirm some dimensions so I could look at the possibility of getting the seal aftermarket...

In this case the cost of genuine isn't a drama at all.

From that I went on to express that I always try and source seals and bearings from a bearing and seal provider directly as the bearings and seals are of equivalent quality and significantly cheaper.

I wish that I was blessed with a disposition and a bank balance that allowed me to not care about the cost of things, but unfortunately I'm not, and I'm especially not equipped with the latter.

Mos: If you want to recommend that people turn to Toyota for all the seals and bearings that they need, then that is fine. But I'm very reluctant to do this as I feel that there is no point paying many times more for the same part simply because it comes via Toyota...

My personal recommendation is go to a bearing and seal shop, armed with the information, i.e. bearing part number for bearings (e.g. 6021) or seal dimensions / part number for seals (i.e 42.5 52.5 6 / NOKxyz)

As I've already said, in this case the cost difference isn't an issue, and I'm OK with it knowing that I don't an aftermarket alternative

I was really disappointed about that (the broken lights that Linden received from me), and I did take it up with him. I'll take this to PM with you.

My mechanic says always go genuine, he finds most of the aftermarket ones start to leak in a few weeks (or months).
For a hard to reach seal like a front or rear main, I'd go genuine. Pity a 1JZ rear main seal is like $60-80

    Interesting.
I'm yet to have any seal leak that was put in correctly.
Obivously I haven't put as many in as a mechanic, but I've still put in a good 30 odd.

The only one I'd had leak where I swear I put it in properly is a W5x rear main.
But the tailshaft has been in and out of the box a lot, so I'd put it down to that.

Any non genuine seal will be fine if its made by NOK , if it aint it wont last like the genuine ones . Unfortunatly toyota japan and NOK have an deal that NOK is not to supply there seals to the aftermarket sellers . The ony NOK seals you will get non genuine for toyota are NOK seals that fit other car makes.
Now that china NOK is coming on board full bore there will be more soon id guess and not at the toyota rip off prices.
