yup, you pm'd me
i didnt answer as its like the multitude of other pm's i get "why cant i post", "why cant i sell stuff"... the ANSWERS ARE ALREADY THERE. i dont have time to respond to these, particularly when the board has gone to much effort providing a very comprehensive faq - which people dont read, as well as the fact that there are LOTS of threads already discussing these same issues which, you guessed it, people dont read.
read the faq and search
how hard is that??

Hi,
Not necessarily. If you look at the "Validity of reputation" thread then you 'll see on the last page Narks comments...Originally Posted by CrUZida

Some people were lucky enough to get a nice bonus of rep points as soon as they started 'cos of how they were perceived from the old forums. This, to me, isn't "starting with a clean slate".
As a Toymods member the rep points are relatively useless to me, however, if I was a non-member I would feel less than comfortable to see "mates rates" on some peoples reps.

did this repping occur before the new forums went live? ie during the testing phase?

Hi,
I don't know Stu. I would hope that any reps earned during the testing phase would of been wiped back to original values when the site went officially live.
However, it still doesn't seem appropriate that some people, and that includes at least one admin, decided to give a "leg up" on some users 'cos they were useful in the old forums. Despite the ocean of trash in the old forums, there was also some high quality input and superlative information offered by many, many people. I doubt that all those people would of got a boost when they joined the new forums, but obviously a select number did.
Now I know we are all sick of these rep threads, probably no more so than the admins, but the new forums were partially sold upon the concept of the rep system to provide a mechanism to weed out blatant sellers, and enforce users to offer something that will appeal to others and therefore (hopefully) gain +rep for their contribution. Furthermore, rep threads aren't going away and it's obvious that it's important to a lot of users and some of them have valid questions and concerns.
I think the concept of the rep system is sound, but I am somewhat dissallusioned at its execution and monitoring. Although I understand that many reps are given and taken in a single day, I find the argument of "too many rep points awarded & too few admins to monitor and adjudicate" these rep points as indefensible. If the rep system is to be useful and trusted, it requires constant monitoring. If this requires more admins for this task, then so be it. If it can't be given the focus that it deserves then the rep system can't be regarded as something of high importance. It's not a completely self-monitoring system.
It's all too easy to show problems with anything, and I don't feel comfortable doing so without some fconcept or idea for a solution. So, my solution would be to put in a "rep moderator" in each of the threads, like we have our normal moderators, who can provide the time and offer a resolution to rep issues. It's a fledgling idea that needs to be nurtured and formalised, but I am willing to offer my services, if they are required, to be a part of this solution. I can assist with guidelines for rep dispute and also to be a rep moderator to take this bulk of work away from our already busy admin & mods. You wanna join me, Stu?
Admins, please PM me if you think this idea has merit and are interested in further discussion.

i think the issues lies in the fact that we're in early days here, and rep is being measured in values of 1's and 2's ...
give it time, let folks get their reps into the 100's, have rep power of 2, 3, 4, and 5 etc, and the issue of wookies and 1's and 2's goes away...
from what i see in the tech section, it works well. and at the end of the day, being a tech forum, thats all that matters...

Hi,
Yeah, point taken - especially in the tech forums.
Hehehehe... would not like to be a noob coming into these forums and saying some dumbass thing, when everyone is able to take 4 or 5 or more rep points. The noob is gonna from the 10 to -50 in a split second!

River, who is to say if a post was helpful to a person who wants to give rep for it? I know I don't know what is useful to everyone. What is useful contribution to one person is a waste of space to another.
The idea of reputation is for it to be self contained. It is a democratic method for people to reward others for their contribution to the forum and to do the opposite for those who do the wrong thing.
People bitch enough about rep now. What would it be like if we were telling people we didn't agree with their opinion for giving out rep? I can't see the rep system being used by anyone if they had to get their vote reviewed before it was implemented. If we were going to do that we might as well turn on moderating of posts and only allow those that we thought were useful to be posted to the forums.
The other point is that the software does not support moderating of rep votes.
Lets look at what the complaints are about reputation:
- I can't sell stuff because I don't have enough rep. I say good, this is one of the things that the system was brought in for.
- Someone gave me negative rep and I don't think it was fair. I say get over it, not everyone agrees with everything you have to say. This is a simple fact of life.
- I don't understand reputation. Then read the FAQ, this is why we went to the effort to write them.
I'm not trying to be harsh here I'm just explaining why things are done the way they are.
Hi,
No, I don't think you're being harsh. Brutally honest and straight from the hip, but I respect that, and have no issues with harshness. You offer a valid and strong argument.
I just want all this rep stuff to fade away and hopefully, as Ed mentions, it should.
Anyway, soon I'll be back in Sydney (Jewel of the Pacific) and will be at the March Toymods meeting, where I hope to get a welcome back hug from the Board.![]()

i think it was you that i PMd about getting a neg rep that was a bit sus, and mine was in return for giving rep to someone that was for a question that had already been answered, the only reason i was given rep in return is the person is a club member.Originally Posted by Joshstix
if they had a problem wouldnt it be better to have it looked at by a mod/admin rather then go give the person a neg rep in return?
if i was to work the same way as the other person i could give him a neg rep in return saying mine was unjust, i cant see why club members should be allowed to see the rep from the beginning if they are just using it to neg rep people in return for them neg repping.
Cool
Believe me nobody wants the rep questions to stop more than the board, but we still think that there is more positive than negative to be had from the reputation system.
I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting mate.
i know there is more positive then negative to be had,
i would come to club meetings if it was possible but bit far to travel, and work nights so out of the question.
im just giving my opnion/experience with the rep system, and how seeing/not seeing who gave rep can be a good or bad thing.
Joshstix you edited and lost this, you need to put it back up as it explains/answers some my points I raised. I took the time to respond and now it's lost, I hope your not serious that you can't get it back.Originally Posted by 3t-RA40
