Default TA22 Which diff skyline or hilux?

Hi All. I'm just wanting some opinions about a diff for the TA22. My car has 140rwkw and i have some 16" wheels that i'm going to put on and i want a new diff that is stronger than just the standard one. I have two in mind: the Skyline R31 silhouette and the Hilux. Just wanting to know which would be easier, cost efficient and more practical in my car. The car isn't used for track, just street driving.

Also i am wanting a bigger brake upgrade for the front but as i cant afford to do both upgrades at once would it be better to get the diff done first and have the 16" rims on the back an keep the 14" rims on the front for now or is it better to save up and get both upgrades done at the same time.

    Thanks
    Nav

    factors:
weight, stud pattern, brakes, length, axles, mounts, lsd type, lsd strength,
    ratios, more?

hilux has everything going for it except weight, stud pattern and brakes.
    early model hilux rn25, rn27 is 1370mm.
later model hilux is 1410mm and bigger?

skyline borg warner has everything going for it except unequal length housing,
worn out average type of lsd.

well thats what i can think of for now...

Skyline over hilux, and F series over Skyline. I'm aware your new 16" wheels are five stud (unless you have another set of wheels?!?), so look for an MS112 Crown diff to use - these come factory 5 stud, and disc braked, with which, you'll then need to go through the usual diff conversion procedures.

As for time line, personally, I'd do the front brakes first. You can make sure the wheels you have selected will clear everthing up front, and then build the diff to suit the same wheels on the rear, allowing wheel/tyre rotation easier than having a setup that causes issues between front and rear.

me and my bro use and cut down R31 diff for are cars, they are good apart from the LSD so i just use mini spools, and i use the pintara gear that are 4.11, then they are the same stud patern, but it depends on were a diff centre sits? cos you have to cut the axle down so far or not at all. ive got a ta22 and thinking of making a diff for it, so i could let you know

Has anyone gone down the tarago road?

I was told its a good option both in strenght and weight and LSD

very interested to find out more, also what diff ratio people recommend for na and turbo set ups.

Tarago is F series like the Crown diff. Main thing that would put me off the Crown diff is width, I reckons its worth the trouble of tracking down a 1370mm Hilux diff rather than having to narrow a diff. This of course will depend on the offset of your wheels. I have a Crown diff in my KE70, 1450mm compared to factory 1400mm wide. Running 34P offset wheel and still very tight on the guards (even after rolling). Looking to go wider tyres so may need to up the offset to compensate, currently on 225/50 15's but want to run 245/35 17's so will need a 45 or 50P offset.

My celica is getting one done now/soonish. Just got the axles back from being redrilled to 4 stud and being shortened - well only one. The housing has also been cut to suit.

The one i have runs the disc rear end with the internal handbrake and this model also has the huge bearings. LSD's can also be obtained relatively easy so i hear. They also have the benefit of being significantly lighter than a hilux and will handle well in excess of your power output.

Just a tip for getting the right diff, because the axles taper down just before the spline it means that you can either shorten them by less than 20mm approx or more than 70mm but not in between. The standard celica diff is 1360 and the diff i bought was 1450 or thereabouts iirc.

The diff on the f series is also offset hence the need to only shorten one axle. The need to shorten only one axle however, will depend on what length diff you get and how much you want to shorten it by. Im pretty sure on the figures i quoted but not 100% so dont take them as gospel. I'll have some pics of my axles in my members rides thread in the next couple of days if you wanna have a look. I assure you they significantly larger than the t series.

Just quickly, are you having any problems with your t series atm or have you had any in the past?

i'm running r31 skyline diff [standard width, pintara ratio, lsd], with the celica mounts welded on and 35 offset wheels, with the gaurds massaged a little
the diff was $150 disk to disk [ pickandpayless ] and i did the install myself

    stud pattern stays the same
    disk brakes
    cheap and common

Thanks guys. just a few questions:
Clint when you say to get my front brakes done first do you mean that if i were to get them done first that I'd have the car off the road as it wouldn't really but drivable with 16" rims at the front and 14" at the back? I though that i may be drivable with the bigger rims at the back and smaller rims at the front. I don't want to have the car off the road for a long period of time as i need it for work.

I haven't been having any problems with my current diff the main reason for the upgrade is to get disc brakes, a stronger diff and a diff that will be 5 stud for my new 16" rims

Given that you'll have to buy new tyres suitable to your car for the 16" rims, I see no issue with running different front or rear wheels - ultimately, you're rolling diameter between the front and rear should be the same. Doing the conversions to the front allows you the ability to play with diff widths, should it be necessary for the wheels and tyres you select.

So it would purely be just the look that wouldn't be good if i were to get the front brakes done first with the new rims. The driveability would still be good right? I have a few options about the brake upgrade that i want and was also just wanting opinions as well. I dont really want to go the pug/lux/corona upgrade, i'd like something better and i have seen the roadrunner brake upgrade that would suit skyline/silvia brakes but i do know that this is an expensive upgrade and may not really suit me.

Is there an upgrade that would be roughly $1500 with suspension and labour included that anyone knows of? with 5 stud

I know of a MS112 being wrecked around Brisbane, give me a shout if you're still chasing a diff?

Hilux RN40 diff, its 1410mm so if money's a problem just get the thing remounted and run some hilux wheels. the only problem you will have is a 205 wide tyre will be the limit until you can afford to shorten it. Also you may not have a working handbrake for a while too, just nudge it up against a gutter when you park it of carry a brick around in your car.

Now 140rwkw isnt exactly ball breaking power, have yo gone through any diffs yet?
personally i would go for the brake upgrade first because stopping in time is more important than worrying if a diff is going to hold together. Just refrain from snapping gears or lots of skids.

if you keep your eyes peeled around here, ppl tend to flog off there pug/rona/lux + suspension package cheap because there usually doing something bigger/better for track work. I know you dont want to go down that path but your just building a steet car, you wont need massive breakes on a 1000kg car with 140rwkw
