have all the soleniods been connected up properly?
is the overdrive setup to cut power to the soleniods?
how is he controlling gearshifts?
a bit more info may help finding the problem.
cheers

car in question is a MX83 with a 1J, big turbo, full MV box, 3500 stall
my mate just got his car dyno'd and after a lenghtly discussion with him being adamant that his MV box was a 3 speed i am 99% sure he actually doesnt have 2nd gear.
he got the works burger from them and is running a microtech, when u take off its fine, then there seems to be a bigger than usual drop when u hit 2nd, but i think its 3rd, cause apparently he can hit 180kph on the dyno in "2nd", and 3rd cruises at 100 at 2200rpm, keep in miond he has huge 19's on it so that may fuck with it a bit
the gearbox got dropped off to his mechanic straight from MV, he doesnt even know if theres a manual shift box in it.
how can he work out whats going on, will the box wiring show whats haoppening
hes gonna get me the speed vs rpm details tonight for the different gears
Thanks

do what brett said.
Sounds like no power to the solenoids though. He shouldn't be flogging it if it is shifting 1-3-4.
does he have a separate controller box for the auto?
if the engine management is a microtech unit, and the factory ecu with auto controller in it has been ditched, then that could cause a slight issue.
the mv box is a seperate controller
he has no idea whether he has one or not

has he thought about taking it to someone who knows what they are doing? you can't just hook up the shifter and expect it to work without using the soleniods.
sideshows performance wiring made a controller for mine, simple to wire up (4 wires from memory) and away you go (obviously it must be driven thru the gears).
or try a suprastick if he has some coin and wants luxurys as well as a fully adjustable auto ecu.

its goin 1,3,4
its an issue with the overdirve switch
mine did that aswell
i have to have the od switch off to get 1,2,3 then to get od i have to go to neutral then hit od swtich then pull selector back to third.
tell him to stop floggin it as he will fugg it.

shane: if you want to fix it, you need a relay so that the power that is held in the solenoids is completely cut. ie. you put a relay on the constant power wire so that when you hit the OD button ALL power to the box is cut and no power is held in the solenoids. Check my thread on how to install it for a diagram.
I found that even when pressing OD button with selector in D the one solenoid that is on still held like .4V or so and that was enough to keep it open and not select 4th gear. The opposite happens for me. To get 1st, I put it in L, then press OD on to cut power so it is definitely in 1st, then I turn OD off again so it will shift 1,2,3,4 as usual![]()
i have a 2speed now brother so no need for me.![]()
