My reason is the space that I have to work with.

Nope, have to stick with a relatively low hat height on the disc and a relatively small caliper.

Sticking with Toyota parts is of little concern, having stuff that works and fits with relative ease is more improtant to me.

the problem is they wear out just like any other part, then people crap on them coz they refuse to live forever.

tried rebuilding them before replacement? ill bet my bottom dollar if ford (ea-ed) nissan (r31, u13?) honda (80s stuff) toyota (ae82) had released their cars with the shitty handbrakes like your experiencing, there would have been a recall on each and every one of them.. so they had to work great at one stage right??

so rebuild your calipers and see how ya go. maybe look into modding the lever a bit to get more leverage than factory, make sure the discs and pads arent glazed up, then it should be all good then.

Mine are being rebuilt before being fitted, I'd never fit a second hand caliper of unknown history without a rebuild.

I think they will work fine for the purpose intended of holding the car while parked.

ok first up I have played with the levers and have modified them to suit my application better, this did help. However the problem is not my pads, my rear brakes pull up hand under normal use and are quite soft and are low temp, so thats not it.

Mrmoparman: you have a point, I will look into getting them recoed if I dont end up going to an offering from another model. Adpating them is pretty straight-foward for me.

allencr: I get what you trying to say and I hear you, the ae82 isnt lighter so maybe I just need to do some fixing.

Maybe I should find a more proven caliper, rebuild them and then fit them. No way in hell do i want to fit those internal drums.

You have 3 options, either reco the current calipers or find another pair with the HB built into em,

    Internal drum brake

or a dedicated handbrake caliper (Brembo, Wilwood etc)

I'd go with #3 cos calipers with built in HB's give me the shits! hate the fuckers.

The wilwood unit is very small.
The brembo unit is a little bigger in size, but it's like the ones used on Ferrari's etc.

I'll post up the stuff I have when I get home, I'm leving work now and will be out for a while.

My mum's BJ2 Mazda 323 Astina has on caliper handbrake and it works very well.

Brand new Corollas have gone back to integrated hand brake too. Different design though IIRC. Don't know how easy they'd be to get a hold of at a decent price though.

what year is this astina? the idea of a seperate small caliper sounds good but otherwise something ok from the welf serve wrecker would be ideal.

02 I think. Has the be a BJ Series 2. The Series 1 had drum rear still.

Something newer is more likely to work as intended still too. Unlike the old AE82 calipers by now.
