No expert and no experience with the G engine but had a 5M-E which blew HGs on no. 6. With cylinder 6 being next to the firewall it might receive poor under bonnet ventilation and form a hotspot - hot air from the preceding cylinders and exhaust manifold travels back, reflective radiation off firewall....? The amount of gasket area at the rear of no. 6 on the 5M-E may have also been a contributing factor - in fact it is so skimpy that one would have a hard time o-ringing it. The exhaust manifold gasket also leaked a little on no. 6 but I don't know if it was a consequence of cooking it or a contributing factor.

I also widened out the coolant galleries at the rear a little. Increasing airflow at the rear of the engine (bonnet scoop - air ducting?) might help.

Re-torquing the head - provided it doesn't have those torque to yield bolts might reveal deteriorating HG. Of course everyone re-torques after a while of driving on a new head gasket don't they - perhaps this is less of an issue with non-composite gaskets but I would have thought even copper gaskets would relax a little and the copper soften (de-anneal) over time and with heat?

Cycling pressure testing an engine before it is driven and after re-torquing and when it is hot might also be worthwhile.

    Just some 'theoretical' thoughts.

Just bumping this thread up with my latest exploits...

Well, my motor siezed and because I wasnt driving, it was a bit hard to tell from the info my wife was giving me. That and she was a bit distracted by a dickead driver she was trying to aviod.

After a few weeks, I was able to swap my motor for a spare I had along with doing the manual conversion at the same time.

Anyway, here are the pics of the damage.

    Can you see it?

    Something isnt right there...

    Oh hai guys!

Its rod #1 coming at you in pieces... The sump also took quite a beating on the inside with only a small nick noticable on the outside, as the baffle took most of the force.

I'll dig the rest out and keep it as a momento.

And your wife said it didn't make any noise ???

Either way, It looks like those pics confirm the dent in the sump theory

    Who knows... lol

Anyway, I though I should add a little more info on the engine.

Its a completely stock Gen 3 1G-GZE in a GX81 and at the time it was still auto - only pulled 100rwkW at DD18. It has always had oil consumption issues and was a bit smokey on start up and with an engine conversion planned I just kept topping the oil up, changing the oil and filter every 5000 or so kms. Maybe I just left this top up that little nit too long...

This topic is probably appropriate for my first post!

Mine is blowing smoke "big time" runs great otherwise lol, won't know whats hurt until it is in pieces.

    It's a 1st generation 1G-GTE

Tossing up whether it's actually worth it to strip it down and do a full rebuild on it with some good hardware.

I'm finding a second hand motor "very" hard to come across!

By the looks of those bearings, it was an oil supply problem. If they don't get good lubrication even for a short period of time they can heat up and stick to the crank. When that happens the rod will go.

Next time the missus drives it, mention to her that the red light on the dash is there for a reason.....

A blessing in disguise. Bring on the conversion.......

    1. 1g burned alot of oil. Ran incredibly well though (for a stock motor), kept up with alot of R33's and 1J soarers. New owner brought it back to me making alot of noise. Sump was empty, few weeks later BHG.

    2. Same guy, new motor. Taught him how to launch it as it was incredibly annoying seeing him loose to commodores and such. He thought it was the coolest thing ever and did it pretty much every time someone was in the car. Lunched and ceized the box, bent crank.

    3. Same guy. Fully rebuilt by respected workshop. Very flat, makes noise, cost over $5k. I warned him. LMAO

    4. Very decent. Snapped timing belt while coasting down hill. Did no damage. Ran for about 40min with next to no oil pressure. Long story. Did sweet f*** all damage. Seems to have very minor leak from one of the camshaft seals. Made noise before replacing belt, pressume cams jumped a tooth or 10.

    5. Spun bearing, not ceased. Pulled down motor, everything is in the best condition I have seen so far so thinking about using for build up. Can read marking on valves, bearings etc. without having to wipe or squint. Very clean motor.

    6. Sitting on the garage floor. Waiting to drop it in something and find out what needs fixing. I'm hoping nothing.

I had a copper head gasket made. Cost $180 I think, need to o-ring block to use it though.
