jack car up, fill reservoir with fluid, let it run for a bit, fluid might go down a bit, top it up and turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times until the fluid stops going down in the reservoir..just make sure the fluid doesn't disappear in the reservoir when you do this and it when the air bleeds out the reservoir it might blow out everywhere..at least thats how i do it at work.

Are the vacuum lines hooked up to it correctly? This shouldn't really effect the difficulty to steer though, just make the idle drop

Generally if they're not bled of air they will groan something fierce

Got told to do the same as above, but before starting it turn it lock to lock 3-5 times to circulate fluid so nothing runs dry. Then start and go lock to lock till no more aeration of fluid and level is constant.

Couple of times I've had trouble with them sucking in air around the o-ring on the inlet to the pump. This makes it seem like you can never bleed it, but may or may not leak when the engine is off.

yea i turned the wheel a few times before i started the car to get some fluid circulating and then just kept topping it up as it was running until it stopped, there was a slight leak from one of the hoses on the rack which i tightened up and is fine now.

One thing i did notice the plug was cut on the rack i put in and the wires were showing at the base of the solenoid so i cleaned that up but i guess it could be loose behind the rubber ive got another rack here i could swap the solenoids over in the worse case but ill cut back the rubber and have a good look first.

    thanks for the info everyone

changed the solenoid over today from another rack and it did improve it quite a bit but its still not the same as originally, im wondering if because these racks are out of mz's that the 7m had a different power steering pump?

When my friend did his 1jz into cressida conversion he used the 1j p/s pump with the cressida (7m) rack. Im not sure on rack or pump specifics but it made the steering drastically lighter, possibly due to the 1j pump being larger or pumping at a higher pressure.

hmm im wondering if the 1g power steering pump isnt providing enough pressure to the mz rack but if the engine was revving alot higher wouldnt it make it work better?
