i mean, how did it feel as far as resistance to turning goes, when you went past TDC for each cylinder?
any damage to piston tops? pistons 1 and 2 magically clean? or funny marks from where they are adjacent to each other?
valves etc acted fine...

It will rattle as it will be detonating. I did a HG the same way - between two cylinders. It was gutless, sounded like a wrx, and had some severe knocking under load from ignition occuring through the hole in the HG.
A compression test should let you know if the HG is blown.

indeed, i've suffered the same symtoms. a quick compression test showed 2 cylinders (was 2 and 3 in my case) with the same low reading. new HG and away i went!Originally Posted by LeeRoy

Should also mention that the detonation got worse very quickly. It started out as a very small knock and within 2 minutes it was very loud. Luckily i was at the bottom of my street when it decided to give up the ghost.
If you didnt have a comp tester and wanted to see if it was this then removing the plugs and having a look into the cylinders should show all the bits of busted HG sitting on them. Mine had blown about a 2cm long piece out of the HG which was found in the chambers upon head removal.
