I'm about to replace my standard 1JZ coilpacks with 6 Bosch HEC715 coils, just need to know will it be ok to run these off the standard ECU and igniter for now? Would it be worthwhile running them off relays as well?
Thanks

Drift Drift Drift and drift untill getting high fever...
The standard igniter and ECU will be fine.
DO NOT do that (If you were thinking of hooking them up as what sprung to my mind), the dwell time for the coils is only around 3mSec, relays simply don't switch that fast (this is the job that the igniter is made to do!)Originally Posted by Jabtronic

Thanks, over the last week I ordered the coils and did the conversion. I figured using relays for each coil wouldn't be a good idea so instead I simply hooked up a relay that supplies straight battery power to all the coils instead of through the wiring loom.
I'm still having slight missing problems though, could be because the pins in my igniter plug are screwed so I need to fix them up properly and see how it goes then.
I still need to take a pic of the final product with leads etc, I managed to tidy it up a bit, painted the bracket black and also mounted it a little lower.
Just a note to anybody else planning to do this, label the negative wires better than I did.. Mine are all black cause I planned on using the multimeter to find which was which, once it was all mounted. But when all the coils are connected by the positive wire chain it creates a 'polarity' on the multimeter so I had to disconnect each negative off the coil to find which wire it was with my multimeter.
You can see the 2nd pin from the left doesn't sit in the plug properly anymore, neither do a few others... I damaged them a while back when I was trying to remove the pins but forgot to take off the big gray part, in the end I got frustrated because they weren't coming out so I smashed them out with a big screwdriverNow I need to find a replacement plug lol.
you would probably find that a better/aftermarket ignitor would give the coils alot more power, if your after some better spark.
also of note, is that if not insulated the terminals at the back of the coilpacks coul arc between the firewall or bonnet and burn the ignitor out, which inturn cracks the coils.

The terminals at the back are low voltage, +12V (battery) and the trigger from the igniter...Originally Posted by jak
They shouldn't arc.

it did on ours. burnt out the ignitor and cracked all 6 coils.

its not the voltage, its the amperage, and if youve ever been zapped by a faulty lead, they have a fair kick
as far as your miss is concerned, realy obvious question first, have you changed your plugs recently? ive found if i dont change my plugs every 2nd oil change (6months) i get a miss. 1j's are bastards for this it appears
When the wreckers open again I'll hopefully pick up another plug, then I'll redo the wiring and make it mostly separated from the engine loom. I'll also look at insulating the terminals on the coils, however I don't really think it'll be necessary, I've never seen 12v arcing in car related stuff. It's also mounted lower and a bit farther away from the firewall now than it was in the pic. Out of curiosity Jak how did you insulate yours?
I have already noticed that replacing the 1JZ coilpacks with these Bosch ones has produced a brighter spark. I'll be going a Microtech when I convert to single turbo so will upgrade to their igniter at that point.

It's worth noting that many 800hp 2JZ's still run stock coils with a good ignitor, so there's nothing to be gained "upgrading" the coils unless you're making truly ridiculous power. That said, if your stock coils were farked it's not a bad idea to use cheaper non-genuine coils.

I'm not sure what my problem is. But in hot weather it misfires real bad. Have been looking at getting a set of bosch coils and maybe the microtech ignitor, Im running a standard 1JZ auto ecu and a Greddy Emanage Ultimate (no tune, just base map). Should I not bother about coils, and just use the aftermarket ignitor?
I love that pic, that is exactly how I had been thinking of doing mine, leaving the engine nice and undisturbed. Im not auto sparky, done a few bits and pieces, but is the re-wire hard? i dont have a clue....
cheers guys

to just change coils, the rewire is easy. all the linked wires are 12v. Then you just extend each wire (and remember which is which) to go to the negative side.
For starters, pull you coils out, take the rubber boot off and check for any hairline cracks. If there is, use blue plumbers glue and some heatshrink over the top. Your car sounds fairly stock so I would be using BKR6e plugs at .8mm to start with. If you fix the coils and it is still missing, try gapping down to .7mm. Also check the actual plugs on the coils as they get brittle.
To get a stronger spark using an EMU I would be looking into using a HKS DLI instead of switching igniters all together unless you want to change the coils as well if the stockers are stuffed.
Hope that helps
Awsome, sounds like I will have a closer inspection of my coils soon.
Had a look at the HKS DLI, selling for around the $450 mark if I'm correct?
But I've had my eye on the Microtech Amp for a nice price of $100, and $300 for all 6 coil packs. So Im thinking maybe go ahead and get the amp if my coils look ok, then maybe spend the cash on the coils. I have a 3040 going on in the coming months, and will be chasing 300rwkw through the A340 box.
ps, anyone knows where i can get a good LSD for my GZ20, pm me, please. I seem to find JZA70 torsen ones just after they have been sold :

if you plan to go single soon,
just get MT LT12s with x6 iginiter and do the bosch coils at the same time. I have the same thing but used stock coils as they were still in good condition.
Yeah, I had a look at those not long ago. But I already have the EMU installed. Dont plan on buying another ecu. But I'm going to service the 1J today, including plugs, so I'll suss out the coils packs, and maybe just look at getting an X6 ignitor for boosting spark. Maybe get coils when I have spare cash.
