will someone rep AE25 and 3J celica? I am not allowed because I am not enough of a rep slut.
it should be mentioned that the 3tgte oil sandwich plate needs to supply constant oil to the turbo, reguardless if it has an oil cooler or not.
the versions with an oil cooler have the thermostatic valve in the sandwich plate. it operates by diverting the oil supply from going direct to the turbo, to going via the cooler. The non oil cooled version has no valve and oil goes direct to the top outlet.
If you block off the oil cooler line without also removing the thermostat pill (wax valve) it could theoretically starve the turbo of oil.
if you want to use the oil cooler full time you could either connect it to the top outlet of the sandwich plate, remove the valve and block the bottom outlet, or modify the thermostat valve so it stays in the 'hot' position and connect cooler as normal.
see if you can figure that one out V

YelloRolla's KE20 1/4mi = 11.32 @ 119mph @ 22psi on slicks

210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.
Just repped AE25 for his great post, can't rep 3J, as spreading around is needed.
(I'm still jonesin for one of these in a Carina...)
ha cheers. i'll share some of that rep stuff when i find out how.
probably posted these pics before but oh well. sandwich plate oil cooler outlet differences....

dudes, my car seems to smoke when i take off from a stand still and sometimes into second gear change, when not on boost, just easy driving. I'm wondering if this is because the little turbo is dying?
Power is still good though when on boost.
If it is the turbo that is smoking, approx how long do they last till they die?
Would then probably do new turbo & intercooler at same time.

Steeko,
Based on the fact the your engine is fresh and the valve steam seals should have been changed, I would suggest your turbo seals are gone, being a ct20 i wasn't going to last that long.
Two options I see are CT26 (single entry 7mgte) on the standard manifold or custom manifold and t28 or other turbo.
To get the best out of either the CT26 or the custom job you will need an intercooler and aftermarket ECU.
If you are comfortable with the performance of the CT20 and the boost level you could rebuild the CT20 with no other required mods, or run the CT26 at a similar boost level, but check your air fuel mixtures if you do as it will be flowing more air for a given boost level and the air flow meter will need some tweaking, however the injector should be able to handle it.
The CT26 upgrade is almost a bolt on affair, however work is required to do the exhaust down pipe, and connect the compressor housing, oil and water lines should bolt on and some slotting of the holes on the turbine housing. However chances are the CT26 you get is going to need a rebuild.
The CT26 comes on about 3000-3500 RPM and comes on strong.
Some of the garret turbo are nice but cost more and really need aftermarket management to get the most out of them.
If blowing smoke expect it to last a month maybe two from my experience, but this might depend on how hard you are pushing it.

thanks heaps for that info 3J, unfortunately I'm not filled with confidence now tho LOL
Will it survive longer if i drive off boost?
Cuts gave me a manifold for a CT20b i believe which he made to fit his GT4 turbo.
Is the CT20b similar in performance to a CT26 and are rebuild costs about equal to both?
How much is a rebuild on them?? $300?
And is the CT26 more plentiful to be found in Australia? because it came on the 7MGTE.
I'm trying to not upgrade ECU yet cuz i dont have the cash.

steeko,
Ct20b and CT26 I belive use the same core (CHRA) so performance is similar. If you have cuts old manifold use it and through a CT20b on it forget the 7mgte one, both are much better than the ct20. the CT20b is relativel easy to find, I have one (if the st185 engine had the ct20b) of unkown condition. When you buy a second hand turbo expect it to be stuffed and be prepared to have it rebuilt if possible. In other words it is a hit and miss affair, and therfore the price of the turbo you buy second hand should reflect this. Expect to pay between $150-$250 for a second hand CT26 in "working condition"
All of these turbos will run without an upgrade to the ecu, however you will need to tune the airflow meter and keep the boost in check.
Yes the turbo may last longer if not pushed as hard.
so to clarify the CT26 and CT20b cannot use my stocko manifold, requires a custom built one ?
If purchasing a CT20b are they different depending on which model of GT4 they came off ? ST185 vs ST215? I think cuts has a ST215 (shark eyes celica)
I'm also guessing too much boost on these turbo's will mean my fuel injectors and fuel pump wont be able to keep up.

Steeko,
CT26 can be used on the standard manifold as I have done and many other in the past, modification of the turbin housing is required by slotting the holes to allow fitment and porting the manifold outlet to match the ct26 size. You also need to reconfigure the dump pipe and compressor inlet.
CT20b being a split pulse housing requires a dirfferent manifold. Not the housings are interchange between the CT26 and the CT20b.
You will also need to rotate the compressor housing and the turbine housing to make any of these fit, fairly simple to do.
CT20b I belive came from gen2 and gen3 3sgte i.e. ST185 and ST205, the Gen4 caldina motors turbine housing is integral to the manifold so no good.
I am not aware of any difference between CT20b models but then again toyota don't publish much turbo data.
Too much boost will necesitate the need for larger injectors fuel pump will probable see to at least 14-15psi with one of these turbos. These turbo flow more air at a given boost level than the ct20 so lower boost to make more power. Your stock system should be ok for 12psi if tunned appopriately.

Does anyone know where to get an exaust manifold gasket for the old 3T-GTE? The one I had looked like it was made out of that make-your-own-gasket stuff. Would prefer to get a proper gasket if possible.
Thanks
I got all my gaskets from SW motorsports in NSW (Stewart Wilkins). Here's the details off their invoice.

Driving highway at 100kmh 3000 rpm,, engine drops power and hear tinging sound, put it into neutral and turn off.. sounds like a broken timing chain all brand new components purchased at rebuild just 4000km ago
not happy, now hoping engine isn't destroyed![]()

Nate, yours was from a proper set. The only thing that was done to it is that it was made for the old 8mm studs and I punched the holes out to suit the 10mm studs.
Get one from Toyota - I will post the part number today OR you can get one from ACL - part number is JA053.

question - when engine was rebuilt i couldn't source new sprockets.
I'm worried that they've died and that's why my timing chain died / came off.
Are new sprockets available anywhere? Like toyota Japan?
And i remember a dude on here replaced the timing setup with a $500 setup from USA, just wondered they fit it and how it performs etc?
