Slightly OT but how yould you g if your car has the fuel tank in the boot behind the rear seat. I know it's pretty much really old stuff that does but what I've seen they weren't really sealed from the cabin (sign of the times?) could you get away without sealing the surge in this case or would they make you seal it all.

JoshRA23's Orange 1G RA23 is Engineered with a Surge Tank and Fuel Pump setup in the boot...

It must be at the discretion of the engineer...

It can't hurt to ring a few Engineers and ask them over the phone whether, in their opinion, it's allowable...

Mine was essentially the same setup as the original post and that was fine for the engineer in ACT (note: my fuel tank is behind the rear seat as it is a KE corolla).

Only issue I had though was the fumes that would permeate through the rubber line would stink up the car if left over night (there were no leaks, system was pressure tested numerous times to be sure).

To alleviate that problem I simply moved the entire setup into the spare wheel well (it was too small to hold a wheel so was not doing anything useful) and covered the spare wheel well with a thin aluminium sheet and used some 4mm hose that was joined at each end to form a large o-ring as a gasket. The wheel well was also vented to atmo.

That setup works awesome, no more smells at all and you can't really even hear the fuel pumps any more which was a bonus.

No good though if you have a tyre in your wheel well

I just have that flat in a can stuff mounted in the boot. Lotus Elise and Exige have something similar (but most likely a better product).

The answer to your questions is simple, call 2 or 3 engineers and ask. As for the rubber hose, I'm confused as to why it would be illegal to have it in the boot, cause I called an engineer the other day about running rubber hose under the car from tank to engine bay and was told it was fine. I wouldn't have thought that the fumes would be able to permeate through the rubber hose. If I was to give the KE35 a new fuel system I'd be doing it to one side of the boot, sealing it in its own box and connecting it to the vent for the fuel tank on that side.

I was under the impression that an existing setup only needed to comply with the regulations of the times, but any additions or modifications needed to comply with current regulations

Again though, it will be up to the engineer as to whether or not they will pass it.

It certainly is that was for some things...

For example, you can engineer a car with an aftermarket ECU if it's a pre 1976 model...

You can engineer any car with an aftermarket ECU so long as it complies with emissions standards for either the engine or the car, whichever is newer... and any modern aftermarket ECU with closed loop control (oxygen sensor) will give you a better emissions output than what is required for older vehicles... unless you have stupidly lumpy race cams or the like... then you may run into troubles. It will be up to your engineer as to whether or not they will enforce an emissions test... the newer the vehicle/engine, or the wilder the engine, the more likely it is.

Light commercials in QLD are exempt from the emission standards.
