    Default Painting engine block

I am rebuilding my 1G and have already got my engine block acid dipped to prepare it for a paint. I asked the bloke at the engine shop and he said he uses just normal acrylic paint from the hardware shop and paints it on with the brush and has had no problems with it. If I totally degrease the block and get it nice and clean, will I have any probs with using every day acrylic paint? Id rather brush the paint on as it will be cleaner and easier as I wont have to mask everything up. Any thoughts?

what color are you going for?

silver shows up oil leaks, black disguises them.

but then again, u dont see much of the block.

Why don't you get a bit of enamel mixed to the colour you want throw in a bit of enamel add (hardener) paint shop will do this if you ask nice, thin it, paint it on in thin coats. If you want it to be extra shinny warm the can of paint in a pot of water on the BBQ or stove. This will also help the paint to dry smother not showing up the brush marks. But make sure you wash it all down with prep-wash first and use clean rags to dry. Also 2pac will do the same. I recon acrylic will fade and come of if you wash the engine down or you use degreaser on it.

i've had a good run on my blocks with washing the block down with prepsol and spraying good ol engine enamel. i like a black block.

though i have painted other engine parts like cam covers with acrylic and they seemed to last ok. i still prefer to use a enamel though.

Just use engine enamel. If it's a bare block, it's piss easy to mask up whatever you need to spray.

Another vote for engine enamel. And the old foam ear plugs in the bolt holes is a good trick, especially when you have a good cheap supply of ear plugs.

"Rust Guard" is also a very high quality paint/enamel that bonds well, self levels, and has high pigment content

Spray paint it, whatever colour you desire! Seriously, masking is not that hard, no harder than painting around things with a brush and the finish will be much better and last longer. Good luck.

i used VHT crinkle coat on my 18R-G.... cos i had heaps sitting around.

It took about 15 mins to mask up the entire block, and about 10 mins to spray it. 2 years later, and several thousand kays, it still looks like new. The crinkle coat actually came up really good on the block too.
    ...... butt scratcher?!
