I'll have a quick look 2moro morning if its not raining before i go to work and see if i can come up with any designs that would work.
Has anyone thought about triangulating it down to the floor (near the diff mount) as this would then provide even greater stiffness ?
I can't quite do this with mine at the moment as I have too much stuff in the back to even see the carpet !!!!
Got a long weekend coming up soon, so full steam ahead !!!

That's not a bad idea at all. On the other hand, is it likely to make that much difference? It seems to me that would be a fairly rigid part of the frame in that area. (Not that I'm an engineer).Originally Posted by bbaacchhyy

Took some pictures of where the rear bar could go. Unfortuantly the bolts for the diff support are about 70mm below the level of the boot, you can see in the pics. This could cause some issues.
Here's a quick design i made up. I'm no engineer either but she looks okay to me.
The only concern i have is how strong it will be where it bends to go down to the diff supp bolts. And i havnt really though of any ways that it could be attatched to the diff supp bolts/area yet. Ideas?
If you've got any other ways you reckon it would be better post up your designs

Norbs - Yes it will make a difference, but whether you notice it is another thing. The idea is that you are not just linking the sock towers, but you are then bracing it transversly to the chassis thereby providing much more rigidity (the same applies to the front - hence my desire to link the front to the firewall one day)
Ed - Good pics, and it just goes to show how much difference it can make and how much thought and design effort SERIOUS racing teams put into it.
Neg Boost - Can't see the pictures that you hosted here at work. Can you email then to me at [email protected] by any chance, and then I can comment further.
A simplified version of Ed's pics will be a good starter though.

Triangulate this!
Factory setup, yeah...
Anyone have any ideas to cheaply strengthen it?

If you have a boot, I don't see there being much point. The whole reason xA6x liftbacks need this is because they aren't coupes... coupes being favoured for their rigidity there.
Basically run some appropriate plate over it and stitch/plug weld would be the simplest.Originally Posted by CrUZida

Yeh, i follow you stefan, don't see how much more rigidity you could get in the back there without some roll cages.
Havn't managed to get off my backside yet to get this project underway, still trying to put my celica struts and steering arms in the car. Its just this and that, stuff i never planned for getting in the way and taking way more time than predicted.
Fingers crossed should have something done within 2-3 weeks
Baaachy, you should have some pics in your email.
Got the pics thanks Sam.
The bolts that you have drawn the mount to are for what ? The only suggestion that I'd make is rather than have the bars come down the side (from seat latch bolts to the floor bolts and then across the floor) is to have a horizontal bar to join the two seat latches, and then a "X" to connect the lower and upper points.
That way you'll get straighter members which are inherently stronger and it will be easier to mount the tabs and make then stronger.
Here is your pic modified (blue bars)

Melikes.
I was cursing my strut bar the other week when I was trying to fit a large box in the back of my car, and something like this will only make it harder to get stuff in there... but I'm going to do it anyway.

Yes it will, but it will also act as a cargo barrier of sorts.Originally Posted by Norbie
from my point of view, the car won't be a DD so acrgo loading is not really an issue, and amy end up being a 2 seater anyways al la Ed's
