Ah, I see what youre getting at, you mean the bolts come through from the gearbox side? 7M can go either way, but you need nuts on the ends of the bolts because the starter holes arent threaded. Nothing has a threaded bellhousing

Although it looks like you've found it, yes 7M start motors bolt in and work on a 1JZ.

I had a 7M-GTE auto starter on my 1JZ-GTE for a few months, only difference is the 7M starter motor requires a nut and bolt setup (which is a whore to use) as opposed to the 1JZ starter which has threaded holes in the starter housing.

Apparently I was advertising in my signature, where I just thought I was helping out others... so if you want to know how to get more steering lock in your A70/Z20 Supra/Soarer, you'll just have to search, don't ask me, apparently I'm not allowed to tell you.

Not specifically referring to 1j & 7m though.

Glad they fit, saves the hassle of 'non-p00 tax' !

lol, well, after some awesome avdice and tool lendage (not the important "tool" ahaha) from the resident perth 1J mechanic Matty WildSupra i managed to get the bastard out.

had the two side by side and they really dont look compatible, as the 7M's twice the size, but yeah it works, just gotta bolt the bastard up now, which is gonna be a bastard as i have to support the motor while threading a bolt through both holes, then getting a nut on the top one.

    FTL!

also tried the 1J starter when i had it out of the car.

    FUCKED!!! ahahahha

    ok, just a follow up.

starters are very much compatible and i had no worries nutting and bolting it.

i used the original 1J bolts, which i measured and were long enough to poke through on the other side, and i took 1 nut off each front strut of the guys SDV10 camry and put them on.

i threaded the bolt through from the engine side on the TOP bolt hole, and the gearbox side on the bottom, as theres a small metal bracket holding the wiring that is held by the same bolt, and holding that, plus the bolt, and trying to thread a nut on was impossible!

also had an issue with the main power feed being a bees dick too short, but i just pulled on it, and although tight, still works.

signal wire plugged up no problem.

the guy says the car now starts faster, but whether thats because of the different gearing, or because the old motor was borked, i dont know, so im nothing going to comment!

so yeah, whore all those people parting out 7M's for their starter motors

Sorry i cant resist , the 7M starter is a better starter than the small round JZ starter. However the JZ boxy looking starter looks and works much the same as the 7M one but is quieter in operation.
