Default harness in road car....replacing seat belts...

    hey guys,

ive got a pair of RPM 3 point harness's,

the celica now has a full 6 point roll cage, and will have the harness bar made, once i finish fitting the cage,...

it will be re-engineered again as a 2 seater,

but can the 3 point RPM harnesse's be engineered as replacements for te standard seatbelt?

    cheers, blake

(edit: geez Ed's quick.. he must be "working" )

the only way you can have harnesses engineered.. is if the car is old enough to not be covered by the seatbelt ADR that say it MUST be a "lap sash" belt in all outboard positions... (centre can be lap only)...

if you have ADR'd seatbelts.. then no harness for you

although, there is nothing stopping you from having the harness in the car as long as you have and use the lapsash as well....

then again, if you black belts instead of red or blue.. and wear a dark top.. zif a cop will be able to tell.... although if you attract attention they may look alrder

anyway.. late 60's and maybe early 70-7s can do (up to 72??), but after that, you need both...

is the 6 point cage engineered already?

i have to disagree on this one, 1 of my customers has an mr2 and when he went for compliance he was told he'd have to change the seatbelts (have to for compliance), after talking to an engineer he was told that a 4point is very much legal to run in the car but must meet certain standards.

ill see which harness' he has and let you know, and if you need the right "engineer" that can be organised also.

    cheers

Slighty of topic....... I was talking to the RTA over here about using the "lap" section of the harness only in my car as it only came with two front seatbelts and they were lap belts with no top section.

I put forward that i only use this part of the belt on my harnesses as it would be the same as a STD belt..

The bloke wasnt too happy about it ( by the look on his face ) but couldnt come back with a reason why i couldnt.... He said he would "get back to me" on the issue but never has.

the roll cage is a BONDS roll bats cage.

the car is engineered....but for only about 1/2 the mods atm,

will be re-engineered once its running again, by that time almost everything will need to re-checked and ticked off,

id like to run just the harness's, and piss of the stardard belts, as the passender one is stuffed also

is 6 point still engineerable in NSW?

you can run harnesses.. just need to have stockies there as well
the problem with ADR rating as the ADR states lap-sash explicitly... which harnesses aren't...
so i'm wondering if the engineer got it wrong? or.. less right than the law allows?

    but kids can have harness

dude if youve got a 6 point roll cage engineered then you should be able to get harnes in with an engineers cert

fk it in sa i can only have a half cage, unless i go get some full blown race license and register the car on some special plate or something?

    can anyone explain this?

the guy over here that runs a shop called autosport has a street rego'd commy with full cage, seats and harnesses

    It can be done.....

I dont know how legal his car is......if ya get my drift.

I have given up trying to get shit legal in this state ! We suck cock.

Just go to shannons tell em what you have.. they will give you a price for insurance - pay the price, then permit the car to drive it for the weekend.

That way its a pleasure to be pulled over..cos the cops cant do shit!

yeah i will say that the BONDS cage, the front legs dont HUG the a pillar very tightly, and will have them remake that section possibly tighter,

i like to think of my car 99% legal, 0.5% due to missing headlight (belmouth in its place) and the other 0.5% not having a cat.....

so by the time i flash some cash infront of the engineer, it will be cheaper to buy New lapsash belt belts and leave it as is

Blake, you would be mad not to talk to a certifying engineer about this, John at Consulmotive (who writes for Zoom Magazine/Fast 4's) would pass a 4 point cage, but not 6 point one, having said that tho, other engineers will pass the 6 point. There seems to be a lack of consistancy with interpretation of the laws regarding modifying cars to the NCOP standard. It definately pays to "shop around" when it comes to engineers approving your cars mods in my opinion.

and make sure your engineer isn't/won't be audited

edit: as time goes on, checks on these bodgy enginners will only increase. your "gingerbeering" will nto stand up in court if it doesn't follow the rules.. regardless of the paper in the glovebox "engineered" and "legal" are sometimes two different things.. but they shouldn't be...
