Would look at spending up to about $400 - so if anyone has a gun like this could you let me know what it is and where you got it - or if you have opinions on a good gun to go for based on personal experience.

You can get new Iwata W400's (what I use to use professionally, and will be purchasing again to do my own car) for about $460 on eBay, and about US$290 if you're prepared to wait...

In my opinion, you'll be hard pressed finding a better gun...

Has anyone here got much experience with HVLP - i was thinking about getting the new DeVilbiss 670 - which is like a RP gun like the top of the line digital SATA guns, but is a little closer to my price range. I'm having trouble finding a perth supplier tho - everyone only seems to stock the older non-RP style.

I am of the understanding that the RP (Reduced Pressure) is more suitable for smaller (non-commericial) compressors. I have an 18 CFM jobbie with an 80tl tank, but thats about as big as i could get without going 3 phase or spending stupid money. I'm spraying a Magna wagon as my first at home task (practise for the Corona) so its a pretty large surface area!

18 CFM compressor should easily do the trick for any HVLP gun I've seen...

Most HVLP guns have a recommended CFM of between 8.5 to 11... That Iwata W400 I posted has a recommended CFM of 10.5...

And with 80L, there should be plenty in the tank... How many horsepower is it?

Its 3HP - Belt Drive - not sure if its twin or single piston just from memory, but it seems pretty grunty - i've only had it a couple of months.

I just really like the idea of HVLP seeings as i'm spraying in my garage - this will be about the 5th or 6th car i've painted but i've always been dissapointed in the overspray from normal guns - even good ones

hey guys. well ive finally finished painting my bike.

i got some runs with the clear coat. the one that annoys me the most is a massive one on the tank. how can i remove it without repainting?

if i sand it down with some 1500 or 2000 will a cut and polish be able to make it as shiney as the rest of the bike?

i had some clear left over when we finished, so i took the hood off the rolla, gave it a quick wash with some dish liquid and a light sand to scuff it up abit. gave it a coat of clear and it looks a million bucks. im gonna do the rest of the car. the rust will be all shiney. hehe. its so easy.

    hi andy
how many coats of clear have you laid on ? if you have put on say 3 good coats you can block back the run with 1200 wet with a bit of detergent all over then give it another 2-3 coats of clear if it happens to run again follow the run down and let it drip off the bottom
[flow coat] ,where it cant be seen , idealy though ,give the first coat a mist coat let it tack off for a few minutes then another thicker coat , wait awhile then a nice even top coat
are you using 2 pac or acrylic ?

2000 Wet and Dry with soapy water and a block...

If you've put a good few coats of clear on, you will be able to remove the run and buff it and never even tell it was there... But DON'T rub through or you'll have to re-colour and re-clear!

I wouldn't give it anymore clear after that, if you do it correctly, the clear surrounding the run will still be a few coats thick, and where the run was will be the same...

    To start up another argument...

I agree that the 3hp 15amp jobbies are great for spraying, but I doubt that they will ever actually reach a genuine 18CFM. I could be wrong, but I just don't believe that you could get that from any single phase unit. The best you'll get is a free-air-delivery of around 11.5 to 12cfm (310 - 330 lpm).

    But...

Unfortunately compressor ratings are like stereo power outputs though. ie: a manufacturer can pretty much put on whatever sticker they f*#$king well want, and get away with it. So you do still see compressors advertising the traditional "displacement" of 16 or 17cfm.

Most ppl, however, have switched onto the fact that free-air-delivery is a more accurate standard to follow when talking compressor capabilities. But FAD also depends on the pressure and temperature at which is rated... figures that are rarely publish on the cheaper units. So once again, the FAD can really only be compared by looking at 2-axis FAD vs pressure charts, tested at the same temperature

So what can you do to compare the multitude of large single phase units? Sweet f$%k-all. I guess you just buy the best unit that you can afford, and hope that you get what you pay for. *shrug*

    /end rant

I will have to check the ratings on my compressor. Being a Puma, its ratings are about as accurate as your going to get, but it is only a 10A job (biggest one that will fit on 10A circuit... dims the lights nicely ). It is a 3HP with a twin piston belt drive pump, and it hardly notices the spray gun (only have an $80 workquip one for now, will look at investing in an Iwata or devillebliss in the nearish future before I spray the RA28).

Aaron, always good to have another professional showing us the way. Any tips you think we may be able to use, please shoot them through, even if people dont ask a question, they may not know that they have a problem.

twenty8, thanks for the info mate. ill try my best to sand only the run.

ian, i used 2pac clear over an acrylic base.

we gave it 3-4 coats and layed it on real thick. it looks shiny like glass.

ill post pics soon. gonna get it all together tonight.

Hey O'man.... something sounds fishy there, as 3hp motors need a 15A circuit. 2.5 is the biggest you should fit on a 10A circuit.

Puma are Taiwanese compressors right? I'd probably actually trust the Australian brands like Peerless, Pulford and McMillan a little more, but you've done the most important thing and tried it

And to go O/T, I'm hoping your lights aren't dropping out because you have your shed wired into your lights circuit...
