While on that topic, has anyone painted any of the high temp ceramic coatings at home?

I ask because I got a manifold done at a place here for almost $300 and lets just say it was the worst job i'd ever seen, and is already coming off a few months later.

I did a bit of research on the net and it appears that the coating is just a special kind of spray paint that is then cured in an oven (they obviously skipped the oven curing phase so I basically paid for someone to spray paint the parts black FML)

I thought I'd give it a go myself if the need arose again, so would be keen to hear if anyone else has done this

DrNick, yeah I have done the ceramic coat job on a custom exhaust manifold. Many many long times ago. To clean up the manifold, I used a water born blasting media in a cabinet (mates workshop), then dipped it in his anti corrosion bath next to the blaster, phosporic acid solution.

Before applying the "Ceramic" the part first has to be heated to drive out any moisture, then allowed to cool down before applying the Ceramacoat. If you apply the coating while the part is hot, you will get very poor adhesion. The part is left to air cure for 15 minutes, then placed in an oven or kiln for final cure.

Would not advise using mums kitchen oven, unless she is away for a few days.

Has anybody used those VHT High temp paints on things like alloy intake pipes, Inlet manifolds?
How were the results, does the finish remain good or does it coke up and become all dull/flake off?

Mainly interested in painting turbo intake hard pipes and inlet manifold.

ive used it on intake manifold, rocker cover and header and its great =] no prblems so far and its been a few months and 15k or so

Ally, I have seen it done. It looks streaky, costs heaps and is generally a crap idea. Better off to beg/borrow/steal a compressor and spray gear. Maybe find out the hiring cost, or at the very worst, get one of those airless sprayers.

I have seen brushed on paint jobs come up better than aerosol jobs.

I painted a section of a car with Aerosol can, could hardly tell the difference between the factory paint and my job, I used Holts Duplicolour Acyillic paint then U-POL Clear on top.
Took me about 2 cans of holts at $15 per 30 x 20cm Section and 1/2 can of UPOL Clear at $15 per can. I took it VERY slowly and always kept inspecting as I go. I tried using cans another time, and didn't have the same luck.

That being said you probably wont get the same results from your $2 AUS EXPORT cans. If you want to paint the whole car with Aerosol cans and get a factory finish you'll need about $1200 worth of Cans because :

- Spray Cans have Hardly ANY paint in them, you have to do a zillion coats.
- Hard to work with as when the propellant begins to go low the finish will change.
- Have to hold it vertical esp when paint gets low
- Prone to stuffing up and dripping/spitting paint, batch of cans i got once were just rubbish compared to previous ones.
- Prone to running because of excessive amount of solvents.
- Paint quality varies between brands


So basically if you want a DECENT finish and want to do the WHOLE car, do not use cans you'll just have headaches. Get a compressor, Gun, Paint and various other supplies and off you go. Try to get something better than the Supercheap "Black Ridge" brand. Buy a $50 car wreck for practice/test panels and off you go.

You can get decent results with cans if you have the patience and nerve, but for a whole car it's not worth it.

you could get someone to paint the car for you for the price that it would cost using spray cans
it would be a classic case of you get what you pay for
you would be very dissapointed as well , as the crap they put in the cans would only last a few months before the gloss would disappear
then you will get pissed off with your car , and want to sell it , then no one will buy it because it looks shithouse

i have a blackridge 2.5hp my father brought over that hasnt been used. ill do a few practice runs with it while its here but ill get new one if it turns out to be shit. any suggestions on a good compressor, that wont be overly expensive?

What do you call overly expensive?? My compressor was $900 and hasn't skipped a beat for the 4.5 years that I have had it. It can cover a whole car in paint without running out of puff.

tossing up between a few colours and would appreciate some feedback (is for the shitbox KE10 highway hack)
aim was to get a bright, "plasticcy" looking blue, not too pastel...but good for visibility..
(leaning toward Adriatic and Zagato atm)

oh, and going with VG's Concept paint.. easy to get to, cheap etc. (acrylic btw)

Topstop filler (cos the flyweight is rough as for applying), and none of that "gold" stuff nearby)
1K premier primer = 4L?
high fill pink shit = 4L?
colour.. = 4L?
wax and grease remover = 11ty billion L?

thiiner... 20L general purpose and then maybe 4L of acrylic for mixing with the colour?

I like the colour on that little alfa...

You will need approx. 1ltr of thinners for each ltr of acrylic paint (primer included, high fill maybe a touch less). If you use a primer/filler then you should be able to take care of it with one product, just thin it out more as you go further up the coats.
