Any suggestions on painting on a 41 deg day?

I figure that if the wind stays down the shed should make for a good oven to bake the paint on.

use a b lower vac an hour or so to blow excess dust out of your shed /shelves etc then spray water down and connect the car to an earth
this will help reduce static build up that attracts dust
maybe even before that ,spray a shitload of insect spray
with a cover over your car of course

You will probably need to use more thinner/reducer to account for the extra heat. Also, what is the humidity like??

Extra thinners was the first thing that came to mind, as Owen said. Just as important control the dust, I would even go to the extent of hosing down the area around the shed. Humidity on a 41 degree day in Radelaide should not be an issue, cause those hot winds will certainly be coming from the GAFA.

Humidity is almost non existent. 16%.

I just sprayed the underside of the bonnet with 3M Enamel, went on a treat, flashed off quickly and generally was great. Going to do a chunk of the car after lunch.

Edit: the hardest bit was simply trying not to sweat onto the paintwork

Well the first coat seemed to go on just fine. Ended up doing it outside as having to shift everything out of the garage would have been a PITA. So ive done it in the massive carport we have, with the cafe blinds down and its relatively sealed. Was easily hitting 50deg inside.

Oh yeah, and while the 3M Enamel that Supercrap sells works well, the paper tape that they sell sucks balls. Two bits just blew off while painting... :S

Yep there is a huge difference in tapes these days, the green and blue tape from Bunnings is the go, but bloody expensive. Best bet is to buy your tape from a paint supply shop.

Mat, these surrounds should be chrome plastic. If they have loads of paint on them stripper would be the go. Apply the stripper with a brush, and wrap the trims in glad wrap. do not leave it too long or you may melt the plastics. Clean up with soapy water and a stiff brush. sand with 800 wet to get a good finish clean of any stripper residue. If they are in good nick, just clean them up with sugar soap, dry them off then spray them with acrylic colour from a can. Do not overdo the paint. When the paint is touch dry, use a clean cloth dampened with thinners to wipe the paint away from the areas that should remain "chrome". You will not need clear as the cans of touchup paint are gloss. You would only need to prime any repair areas. The original Toyota colour was not black, but a gunmetal grey.

    cheers Chuck.

cheers chuck. hopeing you would chime in.

should have mentioned i also have to paint the the middle panel which is metal. i tried to paint both the metal and plastic last time but i wasnt happy with the finished product so i gave it to the panel beaters. theres came up all thick and glossy. mine had what looked like rough spots on it and the paint when applied looked liked it stuck then went spoty and the paint looked like it was spliting or seperating on me. only in one patch though. is there a brand that stands out better than the rest as i just want the best finish.

    cheers mat

That appearance with new paint is generally due to oil, grease, or silicone on the surface before painting. Cleanliness is the number one priority before painting. Wear disposable gloves when handling cleaned parts that are to be painted. You would be surprised where these contaminants can come from.

    cheers Chuck.
