Geez, a hilux and a volvo are both massively overkill, but i dunno about the T series either. With alot of abuse i killed a tseries center and two axles... With a standard 18rc and a locker...
Cheers,

It depends on the way you treat it. Josh Young still uses a T diff behind a 1UZFE and it hasnt let go. I've only broken crappy welded T centres where the welds just fell apart and chewed out the gears.

i still dont know why ppl always use hilux diffs, yes there strong but they weigh a tonne.
for a light circuit car id use an F series, they will cop a shiteload of abuse and give you less unsprung weight than a G series (better handling)
if it was a drag car then by all means use a G series coz you dont need to worry about unsprung weight as much.
cheers

F series diff, FWD offset rear rims (or pump the guards Uleh!!) 2-way LSD and RT142 rear discs... then your set.
If your EVER going to drive the car on the streets, then a locker or spool is bad mmmmkay??? unless its like an air locker where it can be opened for street and locked for track.
Oh and Norbs, Ive never head of the F series being used in hiluxes... I thought it was only G series due to the carrying capacity??? (note, I am not an expert on hiluxes, so could be wrong on that one)
Also, if you want that 18RG to sing, then supercharge it, as torque is what will make you drift, not power... in fact a bombed up aspo 18RG wont have a touch on a basic supercharged one even if the max power figures are identical. If you want to do anything other than drifiting, turbocharge it, but seeing as your a dori dori sensei, supercharger is your friend... and the T series will quickly die under drifting, as it is quite punishing on diffs.

OK, there is plenty of shit being thrown in this thread, some of it justified, however on hopefully a more useful note:
- You can use the stock T series to begin with. The drum brakes will be fine as the handbrake works very well on these as long as it is properly adjusted. Weld your stock centre or invest in a good LSD. An AE86 LSD to suit the small (zenki) axles will fit.
- I drifted for 3 years on T series diffs and regard them as consumable, however they were all $20 from the wrecker jobs, if it's properly setup it should last far longer.
- You can add ST141 Corona discs to your stock diff, though these will not have much if any effect on your driftability
- F or G series diffs will be indestructible, but require the usual mods to make them fit. Not worth it at the moment I'd suggest. Get you car running and on track, then see what, if anything needs upgrading.

Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
It's the front diff, that's how all us MA61 owners have TruetracsOriginally Posted by o_man_ra23

if your looking for a killer handbrake then mount a second calliper to each disk and run hydraulic. a bit of extra weight in the back but the benefits would be far greater.
hilux front diff is F seriesOriginally Posted by o_man_ra23

I would suggest if it's nicely lubed and good condition diff then you will be surprised at how long it will last.
Given the abuse the drivetrain cops in a typical drift car, I wouldn't rate a T series lasting very long. That said, you don't have much to lose by giving it a go - provided you don't mind paying for a tow home.![]()

As I siad, I have drifted a T series diff for the last 3 years. I've broken two pinions and 3 axles (from memory). Those 3 axles had a reason to let go too, one was a burnout on hot sticky rally tyres, and two were on the same day while running tyres that were too big.
So if you aren't silly and stick to tyres no bigger than 205/50R15 or 195/55R15 then things should be ok. I found the diffs that broke pinions got really noisy before they went too, so you had fair warning.
Also consider that Josh young still runs a T series behind his 1UZ, and it has lasted at least one (probably more by now) event.
