google-edit: I just did a little searching... looks like an SW20 3SG gearbox will bolt up to the 1MZ engine, with only a few non-essential bolts missing.

This is totally the next project for me. Without a doubt. I want a V6 corolla.
The original gearboxes on most V6's are an E153 I believe, but some Celica and MR2 owners have used S-series gearboxes, eg S53, S54. Weaker, lighter, but probably the easiest to use for a conversion.

yeah if im going to put a 1MZ-FE into my AE92, i'd probably want to use the lighter gearboxes in preference to a heavier E153 box with reversed selector (i havent even seen how to reverse the selectors... im sure its simple enough)

of course a 1MZ in an ae92 might be a little bit toey, and thus kill an S53/54...... but them's just learning curves

Of course, none of this will happen for quite some time yet

If you do this witzl i'll want a ride for sure! i'd be worried about the torque killing the s53 s54 boxes

i think a good condition S54 with a 1MZ-FE would be fine, the S54 seems to be able to handle 3sgtes in FWD format with just the usual gearbox problems.
this is a pretty cool idea, V6s arnt to bad..
there is forum member with the sw20 V6, i was wondering what gearbox he was using.
What is autosalon? Sounds kinda homo.

Been reading up on the 3VZ, the sound like they have some pretty tough internals. Anyone know if the 2VZ is the same? Ie just as strong internals? Cant find as much info on it....

If I go 3VZ, i can only go NA, if I go 2VZ I can go FI.... decisions, decisions!

since Karl has other priorities right now, and fair enough too, it's safe to put this up for all to see.

I found this during my my weekly Auction browsing...

certainly looks like a good conversion contender to me with that rear end damage.

yes the 3vz has strong internals, but ive heard about head gaskets ala 7mge.
im not sure what kind of internals are in the 2vz, but it seems like a strong engine

wouldnt waste time with a 2vz as they dont have the good internals (you could spend the dollars to build one if you wanted FI)
id go 3vz or 5vz, the 5vz is 3400cc and came out rwd from the factory (meaning easier to setup) but they dont like to rev as hard as the 3vz (nothing cams wont fix)
both these engines are strong as from the factory (minus the earlier HG probs) so i guess its a question of do you really want FI or a tough NA motor?

    cheers
    linden

ps, done a fair bit of research on them but chose to rwd a 1mz instead. reason: because it hasnt been done yet

If you're not too brand loyal, RX-7s mount the starter the same way. So, with an adapter plate you can use an rx-7 (strong), or mx-5 (close ratio) gearbox.

Not a simple conversion, but definately has potential.

Here is a page detailing mounting a FWD V6 into an mx-5. Similar challenges.....

FYI GiantTomato developed an adapter plate which attaches a VZ series engine to a W5x transmission. If you want a manual behind your V6 you should have a chat with him.

Anyone know how much the 3VZ weighs, and the 1MZ? Having trouble finding something other than vague comments around the net...

Found a good list but doesnt have the v6s on it
