I would think the 1MZ would be lighter being alloy, but I have nothing to back this up.

Continuing this along - does anyone know which V6 Toyota engines have the two stage power steering pumps - one for power steering, the other for the hydraulic engine fan?

I've been told these make a great basis for a poor man's dry sump pump, using both stages as scavenge.

there're usually two separate hydrolic pumps, one for P/S another for fan.
Not 100% sure for oz spec toyota but wide body vdv10 would be your best bet.
lexus uses hydrolic fans all the time try early ES300, or JDM Toyota Windom.
    all run 3VZ-FE.

most of the v6 camrys use a hydraulic fan so i would assume its a quick trip to the wreckers to find out, the vz ones deffinately did but not sure on the mz

On the gearbox front, you may have to find a new transmission tunnel, but the R151 bellhousing out of the V6 4Runner is a good thing for a R154 & possibly more suitable for FI...

It all comes down to money, if you really want a set of cams that bad throw enough money at it and you'll get them.

if it all comes down to money, then why are you going a v6? Wouldn't it make more sense to go something suitably silly like 1 or 2jz? Sure it'll be hard, but probably just as hard as the v6 and it'll go a damn sight faster.

How does a 1 or 2J compare weight wise to an alloy v6?

You've got a much taller, longer motor to start with (worse for polar moment of inertia).

Dana I have (finally) replied o your PM.

I originally made the adaptor ring so I could fit a V6 to a derelict Mk2 I have in the back yard. Norbie made me realise that there is a whole bunch of old Celicas out there with tired old 18Rs and owners who don't want to spend mega$ on an 18RG to make 200+ hp.

The most sensible option remains a 1GGTE - this path is well worn and even people who haven't done the conversion can tell you the ins and outs of it.

That said, I really want to see one of these donks in RWD format.

My pic would be a 1MZ but I'm led to believe they're prone to sludging up and breaking cams (Linden, what have you heard?). I'm going 3VZ because I don't have to do any sump mods to fit them in a Crown/Corona Mk2 and I have a set of head gaskets for one already!

ive heard of it on 2 occasions but im still not 100% sure that it wasn't due to neglect.

a mate works for C/Hill toyota and said he knows nothing about it, so it could just be another 1 of those cases where ill have to try and break them myself to find out the truth.

there were wear probs in the first gen MZs but its not a machining prob its more of a lack of servicing/running in correctly (which could happen to any motor).

    cheers

Dave, what are the chances of producing a few of those fancy adaptor rings? I know i'd be one of few who would be definately in!!!

    cheers.
