And another thing about the twins, I've been running them in a daily driver at 16~17psi for years, and I've only had the twin dumps on for the last 8 months or so.

My stock ones broke after a month or so at 15-16psi. They are a bit hit and miss if they blow up or not.

I've got a single turbo conversion, GT3076R, makes 304rwkw thru an auto at the last dyno day in sydney on soarercentral. Have run 11.423 down the quarter. Relieable setup, no problems in nearly 2 years. Getting cams and cam gears in soon, should make close to 315-320rwkw.

i think its a massive hit and miss game with the standard twins, some people have the unbreakable 12 sec legends, others have cat-grenades.

its interesting to note that most people with "good" twins have upgraded y-pipes, maybe the heat cause by the standard restrictive dumps plays a part?

Some say its heat that kills them and a few say its the oil feed. It does seam to be the rear the goes first. Stuck at the back of the engine bay I'd say heat would be a major factor. Well I'm about to buy a pair of excellent condition turbos so we'll see if these die as quick as the last did.

I was originally going to run the twins in my 1jz cressy conversion but after I pulled them off to clean the piping, I decided if they had to come off again they would not be going on again (I liked lego as a kid but it is just bullshit lol). I ended up putting the engine in the car and the head gasket was blown! Turbos had to come off again so they did not go on again. IMO it is the ugliest setup, yeah they may work well but if something goes wrong it is a PITA to work on!

This is what it cost me-

    3540- $1000 second hand
44mm tial- $400 something delivered from the states
stainless dump- Less than $100 made by me but welded by mates
    oil feed- $120
manifold- $150 made by a mate.
    Total- $1770
Sold twins for $300 so really it cost $1470 to upgrade....

Have not yet completed the project so dont know how good it goes yet, but if anything goes wrong on that side I know I wont have a shit fight to fix it!

Im damn tempted to get rid of the stock twins on the VN too. Ive pulled off and replaced the turbos twice now. Both times with the engine out of the bay. They are still a bitch to work on.

I was considering the TR44 route. Im not after HUGE power. 250kW should do nicely in a car that weighs only 1300 Kgs. Hopefully less but I doubt it. The Mrs convinced me to finish the install and get it running before I upgrade to a single. We'll see how things go.

Good luck if you go the single turbo option, personally i would keep the twins, but each to their own. Also if the twins crap out on my cressida anytime they will be coming off with an angle grinder no 2 ways about it, always get another set and put them on i reckon.

realistically, for that kind of power, the stock twins would probably be the go. And the cheapest option.

they are far from fragile and the main cause to them blowing is the restrictiveness of the stock dumps at higher boost (anything over 14psi is a bit risky)

get some dumps and a free flowing exhaust run em on 17-18 psi and u should be doing that quite comfortably.

What is a good dump/Y pipe for the stock twins or a good design I can give to an exhaust shop to fab up for me??

Lew Radbourne from soarer central makes some good dumps but they are expensive.

neonasty: same reason I went single. I thought my twins were gone (apparently not as Wilbo is still using them ) and decided that I never wanted to go through that hassle again. Mine is harder than usualy as I have a steering box there. Basically had to half disassemble the rear turbo to get the bastard out. NEVER again!

In saying that, I did have some serious issues with my old 4" dump pipe getting that in and out as well

what do you classify as expensive? thers a fair bit of materials that go into them not to mention a minimum of 8hrs labour to build them to suit a car.

btw the design of his aint that great as it restricts the wastegate too much.

and yes elmo is correct its the massive heat buildup in the stock y pipe that causes problems coz none of the cars ive done dumps on have had a turbo failure to this day.

    cheers
    linden

if i wanted around 240rwkw id keep the twins

IM running the UNique Autosports dumps... Awsome throttle response and my car is running record times, so they obviously work well...

It picked up up to 20rwkw gain right thru the mid section and about 10rwkw in the top end but my car is running out of fuel ( ie, lean).

Might have hooked up a Greddy EMB so this will see a tune aimed at 19-20psi

I have a set of petes pipes. I fitted them up, hoping that they would fit the VN, but the steering rack is in the way. I guess I could fit it to the Soarer, what its designed for, but I cant be bothered.

Anyone after a set? They are a bit scratched up, but I still have the gaskets, and nuts around the place.
