Default RA40 Rebuild and help page

Hey there all I am new here and have looked over all the threads and got some great help

This thread is so I can post up anything I need and see if ppl can help as I rebuild the RA40....and general progress.

First to get the ball rolling is
I have freshened up the 18RC with new timing gear, chains tensioners etc. Head Gasket sump gasket, rocker cover gasket all new ignition gear like plugs, leads, points, rotor, dizzy cap, coil. when the head was off I cleaned it up and sanded off all the built up carbon and crap from the tops of the pistons etc. I have changed the thermostat and housing and the hoses.
Then with the original caby on I done all the timing and got the emmission stuff hooked up
    Ran like a dream..
Now I wanted a bit more power so I have bought a Weber 32\36 and adapter plate It is all hooked up and running fine had to run the return from the carby to a T piece in the fuel pump return hose. The accel linkage is hooked up all good. running sweet.

Now here is the Question I live in Nth Queensland with a move to Darwin in the near future so I dont need the Choke when I put the carby rebuild kit through the weber I left all the choke stuff off like the butterflys, likages, housing (water operated) etc. it ran fine like that except that it made a weird whistling noise when it was running. I was like WTF I tracked it down to it being a little vacumme hole next to one of the scew holes that holds on the water housing.... SO I put the housing on to cover the hole and now the car runs shithouse blows fuel smoke ruff idle and so on. Is there any way I can cover the hole and make it still run Or should I just leave it off and putt up with the vacumme whistle....

    Next post Suss...pension.

You need to ask Roger, the carby king, he posts here under his own name. I freshened up my RC about 2 years ago doing exactly what you did except I left the standard carby. It cost over 500 dollars and didnt get me another KW, what can you do.
Getting your missus to help bleed the brakes isn't everybody's idea of quality time.

my 32/36 weber didnt have a choke and i live in nsw and it was winter.
what i would do on a cold winter morning press the throttle once start her up and hold the revs on for about 2 minutes and then it would run sweet. The 18rc is a lovely engine if you just wanna cruise but if you wanna go fast get a 18rg bolts straight in

also make a members ride thread and show us ur 40 love seeing different ra40's

    Well phase two has started...
Yesterday I took to the front end and the steering.I removed all sway bars etc. steering arms and box frontstruts and hit it all with a high pressure water gun..
Now to remove all the bushes and replace them with afer maket ones change all the ball joints. put in new springs and shocks, new brakes.

Anyone know what the biggest rotor/caliper combination I can use if im going to keep the old wheels Im running the old school celica chrome rims. should I go with slotted rotors or just get the old ones rebuilt and use better pads.

Also as Im doing all this the days/weeks between part purchases im preping the body for paint, going from white to Blue. so the car has all the trim removed and is 3/4 sanded and preped for paint. ill post some pics tonight when I get home from work

    Cheers Bevan

oh yeah hosking it was that bit in the picture one I looked at it properly, but I dont have a tube coming off it so I think I will fill it with a bit of gaskit gue hope it dont fuck it.. fingers crossed
