in my experience cruise fuel economy can improve between 10-20% and less throttle is required to maintain cruising speed

We always remove vacuum advance on race dist's as race cars dont worry about fuel economy at cruise etc etc,
and we run the mechanical advance quite high so you dont want vacuum advance adding in any more.
If you just unplug the vacuum line on a normal car, you should'nt notice too much of a difference apart from fuel economy and cruise driving.

another questions guys, on the line coming BACK from the vaccumm theres a 3 way joint, and on the line that runs to the carbie it has a sorta one way valve.....whats it for?? negative pressure??

Asking things like this when 5mins of thinking/tinkering on your part would probably answer the question will give you a bad rep... a problem when you do have a serious question you want to ask.

RTFM?
you do have a manual for the car?
"I'm a Teaspoon, not a mechanic"
"There is hardly anything in the world that a man can not make a little worse and sell a little cheaper" - John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)
AU$TRALIA... come and stay and PAY and PAY!!! The moral high horse of the world!
did you adjust the distributor timing after replacing the points?
... and gap the points properly?

Its probably ok.
Check the weights in the bottom of the dizzy too... make sure they can move freely.
These do have a big effect on performance, and can sieze up easily.
