did you hear a tinkling sound - sort of like a metal turbine making its way down the dump pipe to get caught in the CAT or primary muffler?

edit: if the engine wasn't MAF sensored you could just pull the air intake off the turbo and see if the turbine was spinning (with engine running).

if thats the case it wont be a wheel falling off.
when you spin the comp wheel listen for any sounds ie a plug tip gone into the turbine side (should make a mild tink sound if its stuck in there) .

also i hate to be the bearer of bad news but sometimes with a hot shutdown it can cause the shaft to bind if it runs out of oil and scores the shaft.
while it may still spin freely it can stop the turbo spinnig hard enough to create boost.

    who rebuilt the turbo?

    cheers

ps hope its not whats mentioned above.

sorry, when i saw 40k ago i mean 40,000k ( so yer i know it may be on its way, but i would hope not seeing its only been running low psi's)

ummm , yer i ll pull off the AFM and run the car without it on - see if the turbo is spinning well. if its not, then i am up shit creek

cheers for all the suggestions, jus doesnt sound right, that when the coil goes, the boost goes with it !!! not to me anyways !

re my comments on spark plugs, you are right it would cause it to run like shit all the time, but for a lot of kids these days, with little to no turbo experience, running bad = low boost. I didn't realise the boost had actually been measured properly.

nah i know for a fact the turbo was rebuilt, i checked the GCG serial code against their records, got the odo reading and that.

yes, i am really unsure of what it can be this time, coz the car is also spluttering really badly when cold atm as well, which it didnt do prior. then once warm it drives *better*

i kinda got the same prob but its a desiel

boost comes in at 3500rpm and by then its time to change gears. yet the other car has boost dfrom 1900rpm. sometimes it starts eariler and then drops off. can i have a leak somewhere a blockage or sticky wastegate. sometime it feels good in fifth about 120km/h passing trucks other times your ass is puckering up..

dont get too excited ... from my limited knowledge the wastegate is spring loaded so you should still see boost.

no actuator would mean (imo) that boost would be off the charts yes no?

no, with the rod disconnected the wastegate flap just swings in the breeeze, meaning 0 no boost and if you get any boost it will be way up in the rpm like 5500 rpm +, thats when the engine is pushing enough air out for it to vent 3/4 of it out of the gate hole and still manage to turn the turbine, TA-022 you are thinking about removing the vaccum hose to the actuator, that would result in unlimited boost. I had the exact same problem a few months back with my hilux, it had me stumped i was changing exhaust gaskets as i knew it had a leak, etc etc etc, didnt even think to look at the rod, and thats why i suggested it, its always the simple things that you cant diagnose .

The wastegate actuator is spring activated, but with the rod being disconnected for one reason or another, that spring is useless as the rod connects it to the flap and spring and vice versa

You can simply slip it back on, and take it for a drive and it will have boost again if it is this problem, Which i presume it is as stated, but it will sooner or later fall off again, all the turbos ive owned they always seem to blow the clips off, so i thread a bit of hard non bendy nor brital wire through the rod hole and wrap it around the rod a few time so it cant slip off, i carry some spare in the car, but ive never had a problem.

ah ok so the 'hard to open by hand' gate is because the actuator is the force .. not a spring in the gate.

im new to turbos ... learn something everyday

Assuming it is just the clip, they use a little 'C' type clip. The wastegate actuator rod kinda looks like an L, with the lower part of the L (the _ part) going through the hole in the wastegate flap, then the C clip goes on the end to make sure if can't fall out

Not the best pic, but you can kinda see how it works, I hope?

    Cheers
