we had two differant lines of thought on the 't' diff issue...

firstly its a brand new 2 months ago tomei 2 way so seemed a shame to waste it...

it was either a: simply going to shatter bits left right and center, or b: the engine was simply going to overpower the grip quickly enough to not really stress the components that much..

seems its a case of the latter. at last weeks Drift Australia round, after i was knocked out, in the expression sessions and team sessions, i was pretty rude to it as a test, to see where the weak links were, it all held up suprisingly well. i will carry a few spare parts top the track for the next couple of events, ie full center with a welded diff and a couple of axels, but it seemed fine at first testing...

    sorry and 'we' means ME...

    ok next installment...

once the tunnel and firewall were hashed out, the fun bits had to be looked at...

first up was a rather overkill spec gearbox mount....

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

this was set up and measered equal distance from both left and right hand chassis rails, as the tunnel was all a bit off center after the home mods, to get the box sitting dead center in the car...

from there we started on some engine mounts, using the same method of measuring from rail to rail and the harmonic balancer as a guide...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

we actually managed to, after giving up before they were welded at 3mm out, get them to be exact to the mm once all final welding was done, 309mm from each rail to the harmonic balancer... more ass than class....

and just as a bonus, the engine sat in all the mounts perfectly level with the body as well...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

and also at first test cleared the bonnet as is, but we were unsure about with the throttles they had not turned up at this point...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

so from here we took out the tacked up crossmember....

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

and welded it all up inside and out and gave it a rattle can coat of gloss black...

Shot with PENTAX Optio M30 at 2007-08-21

from here it all seemed fair sailing and easy, as all the major fab work seemed done, but this is where it started to get really fiddly....

yeh we did ALL the work, including headers and full exhaust in house ( pics will come) and the whole thing cost a tad under $7000. that includes a fairly substaintial brake upgrade , a tilton pedal box and the 8 throttle setup... throttles were approx $2500 full kit, and the pedal box was $1400.... theres a lot of little costs we didnt factor in at the start, but its still great value now its done, as if anything goes bad, another stocker can be had dirt cheap these days...

$7k is an absolute bargain for what you have ended up with, shows the benefit of having a go and doing stuff yourself.

i remember being taken for a drive in sprintertrd's ae86.
    that was absolutely UNbelievable.

was very tractable and an excellent little conversion. i seem to remember that not needing mods to the firewall but he used a w5x box and spaced the engine crossmember down a little to make it fit? i could be wrong.

awesome work done there, would be alot of fun to drive.

yeh we originally wemt looking for someone to make a professionally made set of headers, and asking prices STARTED at around $2500 up to $4000 for a pair, not including the rest of the exhaust... when i totalled up the bends, straight pipe, flanges and two hotdog mufflers, the WHOLE system ended up costing me a week worth of nights and a weekend, and just under $800.......

yeh his didnt mod the firewall, but it sits 15mm lower and also about 2-3 inches further forward... i wanted the weight as far back as i could, and once we started, it didnt SEEM like a big job lol...

sorry if ive sounded different, mine uses a w58 as well, we chose the ma 70 tunnel because it USED to house an r 154 and was so big...
