    Default 8 inch diff problems

    Hey Hey,

I know this diff isn't a Toyota diff but its a diff and they all work in similar ways.

So anyway its a 8 inch diff from a Pajero and i got it with a welded center in it. I have pulled the center and carrier out and put in a LSD center and carrier.

I have put it all back together and it looks sweet but when i try and turn the pinion towards the right which makes the wheels roll forward it is very hard to turn ie i can move it a few cm then i cant move it anymore. When i turn the pinion to the left to roll the wheels backwards its nice and easy.

So have i put it back together wrong or missed something ?

does the centre turn if the axles are out? if so then the centre isn't aligned correctly in teh housing or the axles are wrong for the centre.

if it's still bad with no axles in place then something is wrong with the cente.

The pinion isnt adjusted properly, pull it a part and give it to a diff shop.
They will charge you over $100.

With the center out it spins both ways fine. Axles went in fine so fucks me whats wrong. The carrier is exactly the same as the one i pulled out the only thing i noticed in the center is the clutches and on one side it has a locating pin thing and it has moved a bit but i didnt know what it was so i didn't touch it.

Will look for pics of the locating pin thing.

This is the locked center but it has the same thing as the LSD center.

The bolt in the middle just to the left of the orange paint holds the pin thing in which bends around the corner and slots into a big washer with holes in it which surrounds the axle ?

Ok, A mate said that when you change some diffs to LSD that the axle length needs to be changed, Since it spins freely with the axles out it could be that and he seems pretty certain.

Will yank it all apart again tomorrow afternoon after work and see how i go.

Make sure you have all your bearing preloads set correctly and gear clearance should be about .007 inch.

I haven't set anything coz it was in another carrier. Just going to hand it over to a pro and let them fuck around with it.
