get the MSDS from the company (which they are obliged to provide by law) and it should have spontaneous ignition temp on it...Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe
however, when the oil is spread thinly over a porous surface, it is much easier to ignite.. the foam acting like a wick..
as a comparison, try lighting a bucket of kero.. then dip a foam sponge in it and try...
although it would probably take a naked flame to ignite a hot air filter under the bonnet, if it starts to burn, it will burn well.
i've had petrol dripping onto exhaust and not ignite... but i wouldn't recommend it

Recommended practice for all WRX owners though. Might as well make the underside of the bonnet as black as the outsideOriginally Posted by oldcorollas

so if i made a tapered box opening at the top being fed by a bonnet vent. with the opening large enough to hold two paper filters. in side the box have a taperd bellmouth to the origonal airbox piping. this should be better than a pod, a unifilter or a stockairbox on all bases?. am i wasting my time doing that as well as making my car look stupid for no aparent gain, even with extrators. if not how about if my car had forced indution?
stick with stock? or go with the above idea?

Sounds like a waste of time as-is. If you had the forced induction, then you might be looking at some gains by means of reduced intake air charge temperatures. With forced induction, the air can be drawn from just about anywhere, one popular place is inside the guard, where bugs etc cant get in too easy, and heat is minimal. Also, bellmouths have proven to give negligible improvement in most cases of forced induction.

i heard from a guy i saw on the weekend that he notices no inprovment on his hyundai. it had a super cheap pod but thats not all, he wrapped half the pod in a sheet of aliminum foil to stop hot air. but you get that when you're a nissan man.
FWIW the s2000 comes stock with as pod filter in an inclosed airbox
yup would probably take a bit of petrol to start a fire ive dropped a decent ammount onto hot headers and it just evapouratesOriginally Posted by oldcorollas
Just a quickie guys, where in Sydney can I get a K&N panel filter setup for my stock AE82 twinkie?
I imagine I'd have to run some ducting to get a decent cold air intake as well, any clues/tips greatly appreciated.
Thankyou![]()

FWIW: i read a review a few years ago where they compared pod filters using a vacuum cleaner and a carbon filter paper and saw how much they trapped. Ill see if i can find it again.
Edit: Founds it. This is the cut down review, ill see if i can find the full one:
