Slotted discs for AE101 superstruts?

DB708 is the front rotor for the AE93 as well as listed by DBA.

The ADM AE101 uses DB711 with the following size:
Diameter = 238mm
Thickness = 22mm
Hat Height = 48mm
Centre Hole = 55mm


However, the AE102 is DB709, which is the same as DB708, but has a diameter of 255mm instead of 258mm, So I guess they would be interchangeable as the only difference is the DB709 is 3mm smaller in diameter.

I think the ADM AE102 uses the same rotors as the JDM AE101, as my 1993 AE101 Levin uses the same rear brakes as the ADM AE102. The ADM AE101 didn't come with rear discs.



timbo, according to the Toyota EPC, the AE101 Levin only came with two types of front caliper. Superstrut or non-superstrut.
The low spec Levin came with rear drums, but I've only seen the one on these forums.

Although the AE100 Levin rotor as well as the AE101 SJ Levin rotor do have a different part number to the AE101 item....

This car is Em's Levin, and yeah, it's the povo pack SJ with drum brakes on the rear.

If it was mine, the easy option would be a full brake upgrade and fix issues as they arise, but because it's Em's, I don't want to do anything that can affect reliability, bias, etc.

Maybe I'll just convince her to do a 3SGTE swap, and run GT4 suspension

Hmmm. It looks like you have a different caliper to the GTZ and GT-Apex levins then....

$300 will get you a set of superstrut calipers if you look around... A wrecker will be able to supply a set of rear calipers from an ADM AE102 for pretty cheap too.
Would be a good investment for a car that sees track time.

For my stock AE101 superstrut setup, I was thinking of using Corolla Sportivo ZZE123 front rotors and space them out by 1.5mm with washers behind them on the wheel studs, as the hats are 1.5mm too tall.

Reckon it could work?

i reckon you will get wicked wheel vibration doing it that way.

i will be using the celica discs re drilled and machined down when i convert my ae82 over to supersluts.

The other option with spacing I thought of was to get a 1.5mm spacer ring precision machined up. Like a wheel spacer but it spaces the disc out too.

For some reason I read your post as spacing the calipers out with a washer, not the disc.

If you have to go the other way and space the disc out, do NOT use washers behind the disc. When you tighten the wheelstuds, all the braking force is usually transferred to the hub through the tight friction between the disc and the hub. If you just use washers, there is not much contact between them, and all the braking load will get put on the studs.... this is bad, it'll snap studs. Just like if your wheelnuts aren't tight enough, you can do the same thing.

Can't see anything too bad with your spacer ring idea though... just that it's a pain in the butt

Maybe I'll have a shop machine the originals (temporary fix) while I convince her to do a transplant next year)

Timbo... i wouldnt even bother doing any work with the current setup, you are just wasting money whilst delaying the inevitable.

Go down to local seld serve wreckers.
Find AE102
remove calipers
pay $100/pair
buy some new RDA discs $150-200
buy new pads $50
install

now you have new brake system that is easily serviced with local ADM AE102 parts.

Not a bad Idea Karl... in fact, a bloody good one.

Might try and pick up a disc brake rear end at the same time.

If it was my car, i'd take the "she'll be right" attitide with the bias, but since it's Emmy's, I might be a bit more careful.

I'm sure the booster will be the same, but even if it isn't it wont affect bias. But does anyone know where the bias valving is located in these suckers? Might grab that at the same time to be safe.

Essentially getting front and rear calipers and bias valve from wreckers, then go buy new standard aussie discs from DBA.

RDA discs might be cheaper than DBA discs... but supporting the aussie brand is worth it

The bias valve should be just near the booster somewhere. You might as well grab the booster and master cylinder whilst you are there - cos the AE102 brakes are really nice and responsive, only a little pedal effort required to stop (my gf has an AE102)

Then you'll have a really nice braking system at low cost, and easily servicable for the future

Well, I took to Em's car today, and confirmed they are indeed 18mm thick rotors.

The second number on all the Toyota calipers i've looked at recently seems to line up with the thickness.



So i picked up a set of AE102 front calipers and discs to see if they bolt straight up.

You can see the differences here - AE101 SJ Levin = 258mm, AE102 corolla = 255mm



AE101 SJ Levin = 18mm, AE102 corolla = 22mm (no, they haven't just been machined)



And here is the AE102 caliper (to suit the rotors).




We all know Toyota, so there was a good chance that they'd all bot up and have the right size/clearance/offset/etc... and they did. I didn't get a shot of them assembled, but they fit perfectly, and brake well. Fronts still lock up first, so that's safe enough for me
