    Default 3sge running like poo

    Hey guys, i recently replaced the 3S-FE in my celica with a 3S-GE, and just took it out for its maiden voyage, after driving probably 2Km, i noticed some problems:

    • firstly, it was weaker than the busted FE,
    • secondly, there was smoke coming off the exaust pipe (just had catback exaust repaired), the smoke was low down on the front.
    • thirdly, it was FREAKIN HOT!!...


    my initial thoughts are that it might be running too lean (would account for heat & lack of power).. but just wondering what u guys reckon

    also, this isnt real important but the exaust is fine when idling but it sounds crap and raspy after about 3000 revs.. whys this? (its just a 2.5" cat back exaust, with a rice cannon (good quality one i think) fitted by previous owner)

    what killed your 3sfe? overheating? time? not servicing it?

    what im getting at is, the engine death may have been caused by something that is still present, like a blocked radiator etc.

    expect a new engine to smoke for a couple of days, this is just crap being burnt off, that it collected while sitting around.

    i dont think the 3SGE is much more powerful than the 3SFE, seeing as they are both twin cam (yes i know the G series head is the "sportier" type).

    but it shouldnt be weaker... hmmm...

    I had similar problems that I worked out to be a faulty O2 sensor. This might be a starting point for you. Hope this helps.

    2.5" is too large of piping for the 3sge, 2.25" max, also a cannon, they are designed for turbo's, yours ain't turbo so it has side effects


    where did you get the motor from, out of another 162 (i presume) is it usung the standard computer? do you have all the sensors it needs? were the guages reading anything odd? when you say freaking hot, is the motor overheating?

    Did you swap in all of the 3SGE electronics etc?

    As to the exhaust, yeah NA engines do that.

    "what killed your 3SFE?" hehehe well the question should be what didnt basically it died because it had been thrashed to death for its whole life, when it finally died (after having but still driving with serious head wear, pretty much no rings) it was because of main engine bearing. The engine isnt brand spanking new, its a second hand engine i bought about 35K after being rebuilt.. it ran fine in the other car. i have a new radiator.

    yep, i swapped EVERYTHING, basically i converted my ST to SX.. wiring, brakes, suspension, engine...

    as for faulty O2 sensor, the ECU diagnosis should pick that up shouldnt it? im getting no error codes

    when i say freaking hot i mean after a 2Km of driving the temp guage is about 3/4 of the way over and the cam cover is very hot to touch. oil pressure guage is fine, the car idles at about 700rpm (smoothly)

    For the smoke: Did you spill oil on the exhaust? It takes a while to burn off, so spray it with cheapo degreaser. If it keeps coming back, it could be one of several things;
    - A crack somewhere in the sump, that leaks during driving,
    - A crack in your dipstick tube,
    - Did you overfill any of the oils? ie, transmission, engine, etc. It could be pumping it out during driving. Happened to me...

    As for running like p00, apparently on 4age's the ECU doesn't much care if the O2 sensor is working properly or not, it may still be broken despite no error code. This may be true on the 3S?

    yeah get a dyno run done to see of its leaning out, becuase i have seen this happen on a few cars, a 4age doing just as u described, didn't bother to find out why, but we replaced it with a real low k beams 3sge, and guess what rouph running, fuckin rouph when revving out just like the 4ag was doing. and getting fuckin hot, changed the fuel filter and it was solved.

    hey guys, thanks for all your help, turned out to be that the timing was 10 degrees out (probly bumped the dizzy during conversion)... i'll hand out some +ve rep, cause im sure this thread will be useful in the future
