    Default t-50 gearbox whine

    hey fellas

after having uber abouts of trouble trying to undo both the filler and drain bungs on the t-50 gearbox, i decided to call it quits for today before i broke something, so i removed the shifter and poured 250ml of gearbox oil into it to top it up.

did this, put shifter on and took it for a drive. it still has this whine type noise, but the shifts are good, very clean and not meshy. gearbox drives fine. the only issue i have is this said whine, nothing else.

note: i have not removed the origional oil, just topped it up at this point. ( i recently bought the car for a drift pig)

now regarding this whine... what can be done about it, and, (yes ive searched) what does it exactly mean for my gearbox? what are the chances it can handle 4-5 months of clutch kicks (no quick shifting will be involved) on a somwhat regular basis.

some are saying my bearings are fucked, others are saying its most likely because of the old oil thats currently in it....

what can i do about it? and what does this whine actaully mean?

    cheers

bearings are fucked, it wont die anytime soon it'll just keep getting noisier. you can fix this problem by re-building it or replacing it

does it whine i all gears? does the whine sound like the whine when you reverse?
My T50 has a grating noise in all gears except 4th. It doesn't crunch which is the good part and still has plenty of life in it I think. First thing i would do is check the oil's for metal fillings and other debris.

it only does it in first, second, and i think third.

it does sound like a whine when you reverse

lol, shavings. as i said in my first post, i havent drained the oil, but when i removed the shifter there was alot of debre there.. i removed pretty much it all (in the shifter housing) but i dont think its metal, as it WOULDNT attach itself to my magnatised screwdriver. so im unsure on what it is.

i'd suggest draining the gearbox and completely filling with new oil. Maybe even a flush or two with diesel fuel (fill to brim and drain) to clear the gunk out of it.

layshaft bearings are shot - if you wait til the gearbox is unusable, you end up with a heavy doorstop - if you pull it down now and replace bearings then you'll probably get a fair amount of life out of the existing gearset

its a t-50... they are like $200 to replace... so a replacement isnt really an issue, its just that major inconveience.

essentailly what im asking, how much longer can a gearbox last with a little bit of bearing noise?

is the second post correct in saying it will only get louder (obviously to a certain point, then failure)

I've had them last 4 or 5 years with this whine, and also break a week after it starts so is no definitive answer. As already stated best bet is to drain flush and refill. Don't put a heavy gear oil in go for something like bp easyshift or similar around the80w90 range. Just remeber you are on borrowed time as it will break at som time unless you replace the bearings.

That's what I was thinking as he he has said it only happens in 1st, 2nd and 4rd; all gears that use the layshaft.

Doing the fluid might help temporarily but it will only be a matter of time till it starts again.
