depending on what generation 3SGTE and 3SGE it is.
aftermarket cams are definately better and cam gears are cheap to get.
your friend wouldnt happen to have a yellow mr2 would he?
Hey guys,
Posting for a friend...he owns an sw20 mr2 (non turbo), and has come across the opportunity to purchase some cams from a 3SGTE motor and some adjustable cam gears. No idea how he come across said opportunity or why he's considering but he is none the less.
I guess what i'm trying to find out is, would there be any advantages/disadvantages if he were to install the 3SGTE cams into the 3SGE motor? How will this affect the performance of the engine and is he better off just purchasing some aftermarket cams?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Mark

both donor and car to be are 98 model...
nah...friend has a red mr2![]()
ask if he has any other spare parts im keen![]()
hahaha no worries...![]()
Generally the non turbo version of an engine has more aggressive cams (more lift / duration) that the turbo version...
Usually non turbo cams a small upgrade into the turbo version (not vice versa)..i.e. 7mge cams into a 7mgte = slight upgrade....7mgte cams into 7mge = downgrade..
Cheers

The turbo cams are not a good idea on any non-turbo engine. They have less overlap and wont make any improvement at all. Vernier cam gears are mostly a gimmick unless you have made other internal changes so that you need to alter the cam timing. The Gen 3 cam gears (Oct 93 onwards) have 6 holes so you can set them in different places, however it is a shit of a job to do, especially in a MR2. If you want properly designed cams for a Gen 3 turbo, give me a holler at work. We build lots of turbo engines. [email protected]
What Terry said.
Having just been through this process, I can vouch for matching grinds to engines...I recently had some new cams made up for my 3SGTE and they were too much like NA cams, and were completely inappropriate.
Duration is the killer...NA likes it, Turbo's not so much.

Damn Matt how big were the cams you had made?
I run some that are 266 advertised and 228 at 40 thou, with 10mm lift in my 3S. They're not super smooth but they drive nicely and make good power on low boost.
Mind you I don't rally my car, and I'm after power more in the 4000rpm+ area.
275 advertised (245 at 50 thou) with 10.8mm lift.
Revised set was 260 advertised (but 218 at 50 thou) with 10mm lift
Too big.
Lift is good, not duration.

Yeah 275 is pretty damn big for a rally car.
The new ones should be nice and sedate though, they're quite small 50 thou numbers, and yes I stuffed up in mine when I said 40 thou it was meant to be 50.
The restrictor spoils my party...these cams were coming on around 5000...when the restrictor had already started to kick in.
Would be dead keen to run them without the restrictor...I think we'd have some grunt then.
