I've used both the Sumitomo and PBR calipers on different things at various times, and I must say the Sumitomo ones are enormously superior to the Aussie ones.

Waaaaay back when Project Sleeper was still awaiting it's heart transplant and dreams of 12 sec passes were just ..... well...... DREAMS... I did some searching around and found out about the Commodore set up and decided I was going to go with that.

I found a brake specialist (can't remember his name now, but he was at North Narrabeen in Sydney and he had done heaps of these conversions, so I sussed it out and settled on it... I was chatting to the bloke who used to own that Cressida in Canberra about it and he decided to do the same.. My car suffered a few set backs and delays, so he went ahead and had his done before mine, I think by this same bloke in North Narrabeen...

In the end, I think it cost him about $1600 or so (including the rears) and there was a fair fit of stuffing about, so I had second thoughts... IT was around this time that Norbie started posting about the R33/BA set up and I decided to go that way instead...

So, cliff notes for the lazy...

Go the R33/BA set up... Piss easy and HEAPS cheaper

if you're searching for R33 calipers, skylinesaustralia is the forum to go to. They have about eleventy billion parts for sale at any time. I picked up my R33 calipers there for $250 from memory. They looked in great condition, but I rebuilt them anyway

Just don't talk to the rest of the people on skylines australia.. by and large they're tossers (they drive skylines, what do you expect? )

Sorry for the nieve question in advance. Is the r33/ba upgrade possible for the 83 rear as well as the front. Do the nissan rears fit the 83 rear spacings, i only ask because i can't find any pics or mention of the rears in any posts.Thanks.

I'm gonna attempt to put 33 rotors and calipers on the back of my 83 sometime soon, I somehow doubt it will bolt straight up though. However, I put them on the back of my RA65 (and another guys MA61) without too much trouble.

You got a pic of the bracket you used for the RA65/MA61 conversion?

Did it look anything like mine?

Aren't the stock MX83 rear brakes fairly big? I'd suggest there's not much to be gained upgrading them unless you're building a circuit racer.

The only reason i ask is the change in the offset when it comes time to upgrade to new rims. The ba rotor is thicker , thus making the offset different from front to rear. Thought it might be easier if it was the same all round . Not a major problem , just a thought.

Yeah the brakes aren't going to make much difference to the offset.

Toyota mx83 is nominally 6.5mm thick on the mounting face. The BA rotor is 8.3mm.

Hmmm, sort of similiar, but then again, nearly all caliper adapters look rather similiar!

No, they are not a straight/easy swap...

The easiest option for the rear is to get the US Spec rear brakes. They got vented rear rotors and slightly larger calipers... ( makes up fo the ugly bumpers that they had forced on them)
