yeah sounds like bearing so me
I had the same for the past few months with my ae82.
I swapped the corresponding drive shaft, and it fixed it slightly, but the creakings where still there.
Not sure how the front hubs are with the ae92's, but with the car off the ground, the hub seemed fine, span nicely, little sideways movement.
Anyway, $70 later and new bearings pressed in, its all fixed.
I'd suggest slapping in new bearings, it cant hurt and isn't that expensive.
Just don't over tighten the spline bolts.
I did them up tightly, then undid the nut 1/8-1/4 of a turn.

Pull the driveshafts out, take the CV joints off the driveshaft, dismantle CV joints and look for scores in the metal
Start with the outer joints as they're more likely to be the stuffed ones
That way you can be 100% certain whether your CV joints are stuffed or not, and all it will cost you is a bit of grease to repack the joints, and a couple of cable ties or cv boot clamps

Okay - after finding a drive shaft specialist of the good kind he diagnosed that it was a stuffed bearing in about 10 seconds. What I didn't know was that they were mean to be press fit on BOTH ends - my mistake I spose.
A trip down to the local Corolla wrecker yielded a new hub I just bolted on and bam - noise is gone. So happy - now I can enjoy the sound of the turbo spooling again - my oh my.
Thanks to all who posted and put up with my incessant whinging.
+rep all round to those I can give it to.

Okay - I spoke too soon. After driving around the car a fair bit today - I've only lost the cracking noise when I turn.
There is still another "brrrrrrrrrr" noise when I accelerate and I'm still getting some clonking. So I'm looking at the engine mounts tomorrow, it's not unusual for things to come loose after a short time.
I'm starting to think I haven't done up the hub bolt enough again - does anyone know what torque it needs to be done up to?
