its funny, ill research and write some hard core techy goodness, and ill get maybe 1 or 2 rep hits for it. i write some wise arse fart joke in the outhouse and it floods in...

either noone gets it, or noone cares. either way, obviously its peoples attitude on how to give out +rep that is the issue...

i used to care heaps about rep, and its still nice to get a bit of + rep here and there but once you've been post whoring as much as i have you learn who knows there shit and has it together and who you should ignore when they tell you something.

Rep is good but once you can sell in the classifieds, have an avatar and numerous hundreds then it becomes kind of pointless. I am another one of those who dont know that much about cars but im here to learn and enjoy the forums and i get rep i guess for what i hope is generally a good attitude.

I find generally that in the tech and conversions section where the info you ask for/read has to be most important people tell you what you have to do and dont whore it up with crap useless info. For that i am most grateful.

i think members who get -150 rep should be banned.
and members with massive rep should be able to control how they give their rep out but in the long run, enjoy the forums and hope you take away from it as much as you can.

*thinks to self, only another 2 or 3 months till we get another rep thread in the "Membership and Feedback" section.

To take a clinical view of the reason for this forum - from the home page:- "learn how to modify their car & improve their automotive skills" it seems to me that rep should be given for providing essentially technical information. Whilst there is, on occassion information in other areas that can assist members it is generally nothing to do with a forum that has been set up for essentially "technical exchange of information".
I am not against these other areas as they do assist some people in other facets of life and can provide good interaction between members. But I suggest that these areas should not form part of the rep system. A simple personalised pm seems to me to be adequate for expressing appreciation to someone for providing information that may help others.
Why not try it for a period of time (say 4-6 months and review the outcome. It can always be reversed if it shows it has a detrimental effect.

    Hi,

I guess you're talking about "rollin" ? I deleted his last message (from the link in your msg) and his rep is so low that I think we should ban him. I'll speak to the Board and see if we can remove the real low rep dunderclumps.

i imagine he got a bit disillusioned when the dunderclumps of the forum decided to gang up and neg rep him....
like people kicking an animal and feeling ok cos it's bones are already broken.....

or maybe he's a genuine dunderclump

interesting analogy Stew, the 'animal' must have done something(s) pretty bad to warrant the "broken bones" in the first place.

it's a shame to see a bad apple spoiling it for the rest.

    Just a brainfart .....

but the long term members here know who is bullshitting and who isn't... They know some members are good in some areas and nearly worthless in other areas. What Rep is most useful for is the first year or so members... when people can be judged on what information they contribute. Once the pre determined time has past, a more permanent rep should be assigned (# of thumbs up... or some other simple show....) It can always be changed....

There is a genuine danger of mob mentality with the rep system, it's a sad fact of human nature that we are more likely to do something 'nasty' if we're part of a group because there is less chance of reprisal. When combined with the anonymity the internet provides, there is a distinct chance of a virtual 'lynch mob' forming.

Rep means jack-squat really, unless it's negative and therefor indicates the person has created some sort of problem.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to read a tech post and get sense of whether or not someone is knowledgeable or not - regardless of the rep figure.

I'd have to agree that removing rep from NCD would be fine, making it retrospective might be good too??

But really who gives a toss?? It's like being concerned that you car cost less than someone elses, it just doesn't matter. Would you disregard advice from a top engineer because he rocked up in a datto 180B but would hang off every word of the worst engineer because he turned up in a Ferrari? I would hope/think not.

What about just putting a cap on rep points?? i.e. nominate a number, that is the cap, you can still get the rep but after the capped amount but it's nothing more than a message and the points won't count. But if you offer dud advice it can go down from that capped figure.

I know I don't post anything in search of rep points and couldn't give a rats if mine was 30 or 30000. If I have something to contribute to help someone out then that's great, if they find the info useful then awesome, if not then good luck to them.

If I get some help then I will say thanks via rep. If rep wasn't there it'd be thanks via a post or PM.

Peoples hang-ups/interest about the whole rep thing amaze me.

Well, some people do seem to turnaround, Roof87 is one example...

I remember him being on about -30 or so and now he's on 1... So he must have done something worthy, or he has a friend on here that's helped bump him up...
