You will severely reduce the area the nuts are pulling up against, I wouldn't want to use them after that level of machining. Basically he should just flare his guards, much safer.

id like to know peoples thoughts on changing off-sets on alloy wheels, a friend of mine is keen on some koing rewinds for his datto, and the size they seem to come in is 15x7 with an off-set of 0. currently he has 15x7s but an off set of +12. would there be any problems with machining the hub mounting face off 10mm to give him a +10 off-set? provided it is done correctly, ie. keeping the mounting face parrallel with the wheel center line?

on a lot of wheels, machining 10mm of the face wont really leave you with much to hold the wheel on, a few mm at best...and that is extremely dodgy at the least
