Yeah I couldn't find anything particularly referring to the orientation of the rotor. I'll have another look over it.

More specifically, does the rotor point to the G1 pickup (upwards) or G2 (downwards).

    http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h23.pdf

Page 11, Says G2 is just before Cyl 1 Spark event.

You need to know if the engine is at TDC firing or exhaust

Just put it on, start the car.
If it runs, check the timing.
If it doesn't, move it a tooth.

But assuming one pickup is at 12:30 and the other 6:30, the trigger should be at 1:00

ok, so cruzida you're saying it's the opposite, you think it should point to G1 ?(1230 as you referred)

according to the diagram that wilbo and I found, it says G2 (630) is cyl1 firing event?

I don't just want to put it on and see, because 7M's are a bitch to get the cps in and out. and besides, it will run at either orientation as i'm sure you'd know.

    Actually I'm not sure.
I know thats where mine was when I pulled it apart, and I know the crank was at TDC, but not that I think of it I'm not sure if the cams were at TDC or not.

Either way, just undo the 2 bolts and 1 nut that hold the power steering reservoir on, and the CPS comes out without a problem. Its like a 2 minute job.

Didn't you have some probs timing a 7M before cruzida if I recall? DOn't have any hazy memories of which way around you swapped the cps? Are you sure that C1 firing event should be at 1:00?

Anyhow, i've got it at G2 right now, just waiting for the silicone on the thermostat housing to dry a bit before I give it a go. Wish he didn't pull it apart before I saw it!!

    Ummm, thermostat shouldn't be goo'd.

If its got its rubber o-ring then that does the sealing.

And yes, I had it 180deg out, I was unable to time it correctly (could only get 5deg on one tooth, and 15deg on the other).
With the CPS in correctly I could get 10deg.

not the thermostat, just the mating faces on the housing to prevent any leaks. anyway got it all done, turns out the pickup on the rotor has to point to G1, though just off of it as per this pic. there is a small matchmark on the geared pickup behind the rotor that points to Ne when its aligned.

Yes, the thermostat housing cover (the round bit with 2 bolt holes and a big hose connection)
It gets sealed by the thermostat o-ring.
    No goo needed.

And yes, thats exactly where mine was when I removed it.
