stock is 58 ft/lbs... 72-75 should be fine... my somewhat reputable mechanic thinks 12psi will be safe and comfortable on my stock headgasket, retorqued and reco'ed head and aftermarket bolts....
good luck mate!
i tighened mine to 87

In the arp stud kit, they recommend 80 pounds with assembly lube and without its about 120 pounds . Not that i'd like to try it. With the poor head design the mechanic says it would be possible to over tighten the head and warp it due to the bolt spacings or the lack there of compaired to the 2j. But hey, thats just my 20 cents worth ! I guess it comes down to whatever works !Cheers!!Originally Posted by Disturbed1

58 was the factory f&^kup spec tightening, 72 is what toyota reccomend.Originally Posted by Ryley

i plan on runnign stock boost (6 - 6,5), with 8-9 psi for track and dyno runs, hopefully it'll be ok, by the way, im only using the stock toyota gasket, not a MHG!
Cheers everyone!
8-9psi here for 2 years already Eldaro. Stock HG. Stock headbolts also.![]()

Yian : did you change the head bolts??
Well, my mentality is always like this: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The headbolts didn't look broken to me....![]()
I'm sure it'll suffer a BHG somewhere down the track after the kilometers (I drive a LOT) and the abuse I put through it. Then I will change to a MHG and the ARP studs.
Edit: What I am saying though, the 7m can be made to last if the prep work is done right. I think mines proof enough?

depends upon luck and the fact how quickly you replace it after BHG, but there is some flaw in the design somewhere, to prove it just google 7MGE and see the number of BHG you will hit with the same cylinder 5 or 6 Gasket blown. While a 5/6MGE is virtually BHG free but has got some problems with its bottom end.
Your mentality is pretty much mine. Why change if it works fine huh!
i think toyota made an inherent weakness/design flaw, by making the block too crammed up, leaving the gasket too thin in places, for instance, where it tends to blow.
mine blew and got taken off the road within a week, so i should be all good.... hopefully...
as always, time will tell

so what if ya using helicoils or other thread strengtheners (cant remember the particular name)
hey dude, if you are going to the trouble of taking your head off and doing the gasket, do it properly... no matter what you do to the factory head bolts, they stretch as you tighten them, thats what they are designed to do.. when you take them out they are too long and no matter how tight you do them up they will not seal properly..
seriously even if for now you will be running low boost or whatever you may aswell put in a steel gasket, use decent studs and do it right..
in the future you may get greedy and want more power... would you rather pull your head off again and repeat the process or know that at least you dont have to worry about the gasket..
i used a Cometic steel gasket $200
ARP head stud kit $252
Carton of piss for my brother $55 (to help me do it)
all up it cost me about $700, i replaced some other shit too..
since then i have been running 15 to 20 psi on a daily basis and have no problems..
i contacted some dude in the U.S (700hp at the wheels from a 7m) for torque settings for the studs.. he is on 7mPower in the U.S cant remember what the figures were..
Do it once, do it right or dont complain..

Whilst this may be the case for you, fitting a MHG without getting the block decked as well as the head is asking for trouble. The fact is that MHGs arent as forgiving to uneven surfaces as the factory graphite jobs. Obviously when milling the block you cant have pistons etc in (in fact most shops will insist on blank block) so your figure of $700 will go up for a lot of people, even if doing a lot of work yourself.Originally Posted by Stomps
Then theres the issue of buying new rings (at least) and honing the bores if it needs it (although you'd do it anyway if you had it all apart) and so on and so on.
MHG is definitely the way to go, no arguements there, but it aint always as cheap as some might think
Just my 2c

sorry forgot to mention that the head was fully cleaned and faced too.. did the prep work on the block myself... however you are right, i was lucky to have people that worked for beer and had access to good facilities..Originally Posted by whatthe?
however even if you spend $2000 its still worth it in the long run..
at least get new head bolts or studs though.. studs have the advantage that you can slide the head on to them evenly, distributing the load evenly..
