John, you dont own a 7M.Originally Posted by coFF33

if your still not sure, see my thread about my overheating issues, and see what Matt's a.k.a Whatthe?'s experiences were, since he owns 2 7M powered cars.
at the end of the day, it could be a mung thermostat, a blocked radiator, a pin hole in a pipe etc. etc. we're trying to avoid him having to spend massive amounts of money just by seeing if this is the issue, i hope for his sake, it is only something simple!
also, mine had the EXACT same symptoms as his, and mine turned out to be BHG aswell.

you've owned a 7M for 2 ? 3 ? weeks , and now you are teh m4sta!
*bows down*
whatever dude.

If there is BHG, replacing the thermostat isn't really gunna do squat is it?Originally Posted by coFF33
With the TK test, you'll know for sure. Would you then just replace the $20 thermostat and fix the issue until it gets too bad not to ignore anymore?

i had the same issue many months back. i had none of the usual symptoms, bar the temperature gauge would sometimes fluctuate. power was still fine. idled slightly rough. mechanics and radiator people alike said it wasn't a BHG, and many toymodders agreed. many however knew the mortal peril 7Ms love to put themselves in.... the thread is on the old forums, it went on for ages... but yes, my metal head gasket had blown!Originally Posted by coFF33
hopefully it isn't a BHG, but, unforutnately with a 7m it seems you must prepare for the worst scenario.... because it's not unlikely...![]()
that said, doobs, mine doesn't fluctuate either... good luck mate.
Well can't get the car tk tested until tomorrow, so more waiting....
Mine ran flawlessly, started, ran, boosted, everything absoloutely perfect.
the only symptom i had was that the car was overheating, and no matter how many flushes i did, nothing changed.
and it turned out to be BHG.
Another little test would be to see if its using water, kinda determines how bad it is, alot of water usage = bad BHG, only using a little bit = slight BHG.
mine was using maybe 150-200ml a day.

As with everyone else , mine had the same heating issues and using water . It blew between cylinder and water jacket . Fitted it with hks metal gasket and arp stud kit with 80 pounds pressure as recommended. So far so good ! Good luck dude !
dude, try this, it will tell you whether you got a bhg for sure, and it dont cost shit.. make sure the radiator is full and the overflow is empty before you set off..
then drive the car a while, not too spirited but not like a granny either..
whenver it starts overheating, drive it home so you dont do any more damage...
allow the car to cool down so you can open the radiator cap..
if the radiator water is down but the overflow has some water in it.. sorry mate but its BHG.
this occurs due to a pressure difference being created when the car heats up.. if your gasket is fine then there will be a difference and the water from overflow will be sucked back in as the car cools..
if the gasket is rooted then no pressure difference will be created and the water will just stay in the overflow..
also try the other crap like water in oil and oil in water etc...
i have dealt with 3 bhg's in various 7m's and this test always works..
in either case the best thing you can do is put in a steel HG and get an ARP stud kit.. best money you will ever spend..
Good luck dude..
Stomps
Well its official, Im now a member of the 7M BHG club, TK test was positive for exhaust emmisions in the coolant.
Too bad for me, I brought a dud... It will be back on the road in the next month or 2, I'm going to rebuild it from the bottom up, its blowing some smoke, may aswell rebuild it...
Thanx for the help fellas, you where right on the money
ahhhh that sucks mate. everyone goes there as far as i know. my car is on it's 3rd or 4th headgasket.... haha! but thats what happens when they aren't done right.
just remember the aftermarket studs, extra torque and running in routine! you won't go wrong![]()
On that note, what should i tell the mechanics replacing my BHG to do about the head studs? i was thinking 80 ft lbs at least considering toyota mention 72 ft lbs...?
Sorry to hear that mate, but you may not have bought a dud, as the extreme majority of 7M's would have had a BHG by this stage.
I hope you get everything up and running again soon
Also, John, arent ya glad he didnt go out and buy another thermostat? considering it wouldnt have fixed the problem and all?
Eldar.O.
well if you intend to run high boost than go for 80 ft-lb. For a N/A 7, 72 is enough. Yeah good luck with it and as always my advice go j route. It will cost less, at least for just running it if you are not after big power.
