Default 1jz cressy fires but dies instantly?

Had the car all loaded up to take to winton yesterday, i had been driving it to work a few times that week with no dramas.
I start the car yesterday, and it dies. Crank it over and its all fine again, revs sweet etc
Get about a km down the road, check engine light comes on, engine dies and i roll to a stop.

When you turn the key, the car will fire but then die. If you leave it for a while and then try starting it will run for slightly longer before dying (only like 2 seconds or so).

Checked fuel at the rail, it's got heaps, ive tried crimping the return hose to build pressure, no different.

Pulled a plug out and turned it over, got plenty of spark, plugs look fine also.

ECU and wiring is stock JZX81, but has a greddy SCC and greddy copy BCC spliced in, i also have a defi tacho on the rpm line.

I know it could be so many different things, but could someone please gimmie a good starting point lol..

    Cheers,

    Troy

This is an AFM motor correct? if so, sounds like a big vacuum leak.

I had similar probs recently when my old ABV pipe had its cap blown off.

Although I cant explain why it worked yesterday for 1 km...

Check the codes would be a very good place to start (short TE1 -> E1 / GND) in the diag box).

mine had a problem when i first got her all running, a few have suffered. the plugs for the coils get heat affected and break, so they don't clip into the coil properly.

this means that occaisionly a signal miss will happen, the igniter logs this, this interuption enough causes the ecu to stop the engine with a check light coming on.

happened to me a few times. drove fine, then every now and then she would die, sometimes start again sometimes not. I unpluged them all tightened the connections and cable tied the 2 cracked plugs on.

    fixed since

so you've hard wired on the fuel pump and tested it?

Fp and B in the diags terminal will keep the pump on.

Had a 1J ECU cranking, firing and then dieing 2 weeks ago. The main relay output was fried. Changed the transistor and load resistor in that circuit and it was fine.

Yep, my soarer was doing the same. Bridge FP and +B terminals in the diagnostic plug in the engine bay. My problem was a fuel pump ECU, not sure what electric setup your cressida runs though. Was getting enough fuel to run for up to 7 seconds before the FP ECU problem caused it to die.

1JZ ECU's are getting long in the legs now as well, plenty of them are causing a large variety of problems, so something to keep in mind if the other stuff doesnt work.

Thanks heaps for the replies guys.

I went home at lunch today and tried the hard wiring of the fuel pump, no dice.
So i pulled the codes, came up with |_|||| which is code 14, ignition.

Should i just follow their directions or go for the usual suspects with faulty coils?

There was 1 coil pack plug that was dodgy, so i cable tied that on, no difference either.

Check your coils but if it seems odd for it to be a coil problem if it happens even when cold. Coils are one of the last links in the ign chain, and it sounds like its something further up the chain. CAS, AFM/MAP, ECU is what I'd be looking at.

    Just my thoughts.

Had that error when the sprocket had come off the back of the crank pulley (the one behind the balancer). Unlikely that yours has done that but could be worth keeping in mind.
Any tacho boosters fitted to the car?
Pull the ECU apart and check for leaky capacitors also.

I thought that, but it has spark? Its just odd that the car starts beautifully but it seems when it uses whatever fuel is in the rail, it dies

Ribfeast, nah no booster, using all jzx81 wiring so digital dash. My defi tach works without a booster somehow!

sounds like the problem i have at the moment. try disconnecting the wiring plug off your map sensor and then restart it ,if it is a dodgey map sensor the engine will still run [a bit rich but ] if this doesnt help keep looking.cheers bigwad
