Steve,
Every set of JE pistons iv bought (work) has come with file to fit rings, except for a 450 motorcross bike engine im doing.
It would be wise to make sure that your 1g pistons didnt come with file to fit rings. Allan or Tim at PW should be able to tell you this of the top of their head. If not, then check with the engine builder(if you didnt do it yourself). See if they act dumb when you ask them what the ring gaps were.
TotalSeal rings should come with plastic tabs on the corrigated oil ring (between the two oil rails). This is to stop them from overlapping. If they didnt or were removed, a chance exsists that the middle oil ring has been overlapped on one or more cylinders. Which would explain your smoke.
Does you oil smell like fuel? Does it turn black quick? Is there a crankcase breather you can pressure test from while the engine is running? What do you spark plugs look like?
The only other governing factors controlling this would be hone pattern, what stone grit the machine shop used on the bores, clearance and your run in procedure.
As i said, we tend to run these sorts of engines in on the harder side of life.
Typically 800 ft pounds of torque at 3500rpm![]()
