    Default Oil cooler on 20v

Im thinking about the things im putting on my car and im trying to cut out the things that arent 100% necessary to finish it off.

will my 20v be ok without an oil cooler? i imagine it would be. i dont think ill get much of a chance to take it on the track just yet and will probably fit one before i do take it out the car will jsut be used for crusing around ect.

    whats everyones opinion?

    Hey Dom,

I would think your car would be fine for every day commuting. It will be fine for hard driving also, but for piece of mind I would not do so for extended periods of time...

But yeah, definately fit one as soon as you can...

    Good luck mate,

    Jeremy

i'm not using an oil cooler on my smallport, seems fine.

i have heard of 20 valve engines being affected by oil filter choice (as the VVT is "powered" by oil pressure) but if the oil cooler is anything like a 16 valve one, then it won't affect this.

make sure you can bolt the filter straight on the block without the sandwitch plate, might take some working out.

it will increase the life of your oil... and keep it closer to the proper operating temp (if you have a thermostat)

it will also increase your cooling capacity.. since usually the heat in the oil is lost via the water, and thus radiator...

if you lose heat from the oil itself, you decrease heat transfer to the water, and thus the engine can run cooler... it will still be regulated by the thermostat (in both water and oil) but the extra heat loss capability is always a good thing.

also makes it easy to plumb in both pressure and temp gauges for the oil.

Stew, im pretty sure the 20v has an oil pressure sender standard on the block. its plumbed in right near the oil filter.

even if i dont run an oil cooler right now i 100% have to use a remote filter mount becasue i cant fit the filter in with my engine mount.

when i do get round to installing it the setup will consist of most likely a 19 row high pressure cooler, remote thermostat, along with my remote mount. its just the oil cooler itself is whats going to cost me and i cant afford it.

i dont really intend to drive the car for long periods of time anyways to begin with but if i can afford to do it i deffintaly will.

I had an oil cooler installed on my 20v it didn't affect the engine's performance at all.
Its mainly for preserving the engine from overheating. I didn't have a thermostat either.
I noted that if you ran proper coolant (genuine Toyota) the car ran at proper temp. When i first had it with cheap coolant the car ran alittle cool about 1/4 from the guage.
But overall it was good. The cooler i had was the 4age original. You don't need it that big for the car as it does not run that hot.

If you had felt how hot the inlet line on my oil cooler was on the 42+ degree G1 drift day on saturday, you would be pretty sold on fitting one. I wouldnt want oil that hot in my engine..

But mind you, are you planing on drifting in 42+ degree days?

i dont have one installed(but its still there from the 16v setup). i wasnt really planning on using it as i kain the shit out of my silver 20v and it never gets hot. never above 1/4(except when im stuck in trafic for ages). i dont think i will use it, but if i did, what would i need to get to hook it up? and where do i plug it into the block?

should i get my cooler flow tested or cleaned? as the engine it came off had a blown head and there might be some goo in there.

In the 20v install, you use the oil pressure sender from the 16v and then the sandwich plate should have the inlet & return for the oil. Very easy to do. I had mine placed in the same place as the 16v after the conversion.

Oil cooler is always better than without trust me. The only reason you wouldn't would be if you were in like 20 degree and below climate where you need the car to be warmer.

I'm actually putting one in my civic which doesn't have one also.

P.S i forgot to get the oil sender unit you need to bend a 12 spanner at 90 degrees to get the hex piece out. Buy a cheap spanner to do this don't waste the expensive one.

If you leave the original 20v oil sender you won't get the oil pressure reading to your guage, unless your not using the guage then don't worry about it

i think possibly that a 19row cooler may be too big for a n/a 20v i was looking into oil coolers for my 350hp 4agte setup and they reccomended going for a 19 row so something smaller may suit

agreed the 1.6ltrs doesn't produce that much heat. Just rem the 20v doesn't come with one standard so it doesn't realy need that much cooling. I'd use the one that was in the 16v if you have it or use a transmission cooler from another vehicle. Just make sure you clean it out properly

yea i cant use the standard 4AGE sandwich plate becasue it fouls my engine mount which is why im using a remote mounted filter.

can anyone suggest an oil cooler off a standard car i could use? id imagine an RX7 series IV would be too big but it does have an inbuilt thermostat and can be mounted easily.

would there be any problems in using a core that is too big? given that the rx7 thermostat opertates on pressure and temputrature togehter, if the oil wasnt hot enough the thermostat closes itself so if the oil wasnt hot enough it wouldnt be passing through the core.

but for extremes i suppose id be safe?

or will this cause problems, i cant see it but anyone elses opinions??

you can get inline thermostats for the remote oil filter lines then buy one of those cheap just jap units and away you go i think they are $99 but they are a 19row unit so maybee a bit overkill but thats what im gonna do.

do you have any pics of your remote filter sandwich plate that ur using on the block??
