I'm running a permacool one on mine, with their sandwich plate and inline thermostat. It's their 250hp rated one, partly cause the shape fitted better than the 150hp one, but mainly for headroom in case of future mods and i just figure better safe than sorry. It's sees the track fairly regularly so i went a bit bigger and got the thermostat, which means it's perfectly happy cruising at 80 on a wet 10 degree night or seeing 8k rpm round wakefield in 30-odd degrees.

If you are going to use a 19row on an NA be sure to use a thermostat. After 5-6 laps of the track on my 4agte the oil is barely warm (19row full flow).

dose this sandwich plate have a built in thermo? should i spend the extra money to get one?

also i have an oil pressure gauge, will the sandwitch plate interfere with the after market sender?

I bought it about 8 months ago from www.summitracing.com (in the states) and it was $170 US all up, about $225-$230 oz at the moment. I got the oil cooler sandwich kit and the thermostat, which was only about $20 extra from (v. hazy) memory.

The kit comes with everything you need, different adaptors, all hose, clamps, ties, some mounting straps, or you can buy it as a relocation kit with different orientation plates etc. Or just pick and match parts.

It turned up about 4 days later too, really good to deal with, would definately recommend them, esp if you're too lazy or too busy to go shopping.

I can take some photos tonight if you want to see, 4agte?

Is the motorsport connections one a permacool? I have a feeling they sell them but, meh, internet shopping = teh win

How do you find their hose & clamps? I'd be worried for full pressure/flow system you'd want some good fittings?

Or are the 20v only bypass?

-gt- yeah they sell permacool but i dont think permacool ones suited my application as i needed side exiting fittings if that makes sense basicially mine is an oil cooler sandwich plate with a blockoff plate

You mean side exiting fittings out of the block adaptor? yeah, not sure about those. I know they definately do different port arrangements for the remote filter bit (ports up, left, right etc) so would've thought they'd do side ports for the block adaptor but can't confirm.

Joel, my old 16V was bypass stock, but i've gone full flow for the 20V, and everything is pretty top quality in these kits. Fittings, hose, clamps all good stuff. That's another reason i went with the permacool, all new, good quality hoses and fittings. I'd definately say at least check them out to compare if you're shopping for a cooler.

www.perma-cool.com (can't purchase from there, i bought from summit racing)

Mine didn't have a thermostat. I did speak to my friend before i did it and he told me that your car's water cooling system will take effect and the water thermostat will close if the car runs too cold. It seemed reasonable at the time so i never bothered with one.

I'd be more worried about the temp of the oil, not so much the engine. Yeah, the water thermostat will keep the engine at temp, but if you're running full flow at cruise in cold conditions, the flow rate through the cooler will be slow enough to ensure the oil gets max cooling, and it will drop well out of operating temp range.

I heard the same things that you don't need a thermostat but with the big range of operating conditions my car goes through and the large oil cooling capacity of my system i just felt it was the best option to keep things steady. For it to be big enough to handle hot track days its going to cool way too much at low load cruise at speed in cold temps. For not much more money its peace of mind, and it helps the oil come up to temp quicker at startup too.

If your water cooling system needs a thermostat why doesn't your oil???

As for the photos, i've taken some and spent 1.5 hrs trying to upload them but photobucket is being a bitch. I'll try again later...

you'll find though most stock cars with oil coolers do not have a thermostat though, just a thought.

Btw i'm not saying that the thermostat is not a good option jsut that its not 100% necessary.

if im using an oil cooler i am, without question, going to have it operating with a thermostat. becasue the car will be used to daily driving needs as well as on the track i need to get the oil a chance to warm up at least! which wont happen if its constantly running through the core.
